47 METRES DOWN is yet another shark-based thriller with a decent central premise: a couple of American teenagers go cage-diving but have an accident which strands them deep below the surface in a damaged cage and surrounded by flesh-hungry sharks. I'm typically a fan of single location films but this one fails to engage very much with the viewer thanks to the middling script which creates a couple of irritating, unsympathetic lead characters. On the plus side, the eerie and isolated setting is effectively portrayed, and the CGI shark effects are very realistic indeed. But the end result can't help but feel a bit pat and that silly twist doesn't help much.

Single location sharks
simple premise
Sisters Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt) are vacationing at a Mexican resort. Lisa reveals that her boyfriend Stuart had broken up with her. The girls connect with a couple of locals who take them to a shark cage excursion on Captain Taylor (Matthew Modine)'s boat. The cage is lowered five meters but something goes wrong. The cage sinks and lands some 47 meters below the surface with sharks circling above.
The premise is exceeding simple. Many shark movies are relatively simple. Two aspects do hold this back. The girls have to wear masks which limit any acting strictly to their voice work. The second is the blue nothingness. Everything looks the same and there's no way to comprehend the geography. The sharks come out of nowhere. One could dread every moment waiting for the sharks but I tend to drop the entire pretense and get bored. The final reveal is not that compelling. It's not my type of shark movie.
47 Meters Down
The greatest shark film ever made was Jaws. This is not even half as good as that.
Lisa and Kate are sisters who are holidaying in Mexico. They decide to go shark watching in a clapped out boat operated by Captain Taylor. The rusty shark cage collapses and drops 47 meters into the sea. Sharks circle around them and the women are running out of oxygen.
If they try to swim to safety they might get attacked by a shark and get the bends. If they stay in the cage, they have to hope that they get rescued soon.
47 Meters Down is well shot when the two sisters are below water. Unfortunately the characters are boring, the script is functional with bad dialogue. It never managed to even raise much interest from me, mainly because there is a lack of tension.
This is a dull, unpretentious cheaply made B movie.
