Surprised by the low rating- it was an excellent movie

Let me state up front that compared to "other movies" this movie is not a 10 but for what I expected it to be -a kid friendly, fun-loving movie that is relatively straightforward- it gets a 10. My 8 yr old son and 10 yr old daughter loved it, and so did I. It was sweet and heartfelt.

I cried each time the dog became another dog, and I don't think I am that sensitive.

In fact, this movie reminds me a bit of look who's talking, in the mind of a baby but in this movie, in the mind of a dog. It may feel realistic for some and not for others but who cares, it is a movie to make you smile and it is definitely not reality.

sappy dog film lost its way

A dog gets reincarnated over and over again. He's named Bailey and becomes a loving companion to Ethan. Ethan has a romance with Hannah. They are derailed by tragedy and Bailey is reborn again and again.

Dog reincarnation is problematic as a story device. The first half is a sappy doggy melodrama. It's nothing new and almost hits the heartstrings towards the end. The second half has the reincarnation problem. It becomes repetitive and disconnected which leads to the final section. It's interesting to try to reconnect the plot. By that point, the movie had already lost its way home.

What a catch

The film is seen through the eyes of a dog as we get a nonsensical cutesy narrative. It seems dogs can re-incarnate, at least in this film, so when it comes to the multiple "Old Yeller" scenes, we all feel warm and fuzzy instead of bawling our eyes out. We follow the lives of multiple dogs until they come full circle as their only purpose in life is to bring us happiness. Oops, sorry for that spoiler.

There is a scene of a drunken father acting disorderly and multiple dogs dying...no Labs.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.
