I agree with the general consensus that the late Edward Herrmann and Tim Matheson's scenes together (brothers, one a psychiatrist, the second a director of commercials) are the best of "A Little Sex". Kate Capshaw (quite beautiful and perhaps too good an actress for the material) is Matheson's love interest in the film. This is one of those "well, we live together so let's marry and see how it works out" kind of romantic comedies. When Matheson tries to commit solely to Capshaw, it seems the more the ladies want to bed him. Herrmann offers analyses to his brother, Matheson's situation. Temptation and the allure of instant sexual gratification are too much to resist. When caught cheating, Matheson realizes his error and wants to win Capshaw back. New York City is always quite the right sort of setting for a film such as this, where relationships go through the trenches. In the 80s (well, really it hasn't changed even though we throw around the word "dated"),sex was every bit the topic of discussion and very much a focal point in films and lives. This isn't the typical kind of sex comedy where nude bodies are all over the place, though. John Glover has a nice little part as Capshaw's good friend who offers her a place to stay while recovering from her broken marriage. Wallace Shawn, the consummate scene-stealer, is a friend of Matheson's, and another character who offers his thoughts and opinions to the young man trying to "figure things out". This isn't remotely memorable or even all that "funny", but there are some bright spots, particularly in the thoughtful dialogues often shared where relationships (marriage) are discussed. Matheson's character is the usual "boyishly handsome young stud trying to grow up" while Capshaw is the "love interest trying to decide if he is worth investing emotionally in". I don't feel anything resonates long after its over, but "A Little Sex" has its moments. The film seems to indicate Matheson will commit to Capshaw but do I truthfully believe their relationship could be lasting? Nah, but the film wants to leave us thinking it has a chance. Wishful thinking?

A Little Sex
Great Entertainment
Excellent film that is full of comedy, romance and a good comparison between being married and single. Michael Donovan, (Tim Matheson) and Katherine, (Kate Capshaw) are a young couple who enjoy the pleasure of living with each other unmarried. Michael has a big problem which is loving the girls too much and far too many one-night stands and therefore is afraid of tying the knot of marriage.
Michael and Katherine have lots of fun teasing each other and shocking the older generation with sexy talk while picking out fruit from an open market.
One day, out of the blue, Michael asks Katherine if she would like to marry him, which rather took Katherine off guard and she did say, "YES".
This is when the story takes on another direction for this married couple and of course, Michael has to fight off all his sexual desires to make love to other women.
Tim Matheson and Katherine had great chemistry working together and this made for a great entertaining film to view and enjoy.
Entertaining and fun.
A lighthearted romp that is lots of fun. Great chemistry between Tim Matheson and Kate Capshaw. One of the early movies that launched Kate's career. I haven't seen this film in a while and am looking forward to seeing it again to see Wendie Malick in one of her first roles.
