When widowed Chen runs afoul of customs officer Fang their initial animosity quickly turns into an epic romance which manages to survive the Japanese Occupation, the Cultural Revolution, and a treacherous escape to Hong Kong where they eventually conceive the future Jackie Chan. Overwrought with weeping violins, slo-mo good-byes, and bawling children, Mabel Cheung's teary Chinese version of "Dr. Zhivago" still manages to entertain by its sheer audacity if nothing else.
