This is a Russian film shot in NYC in 1930's alternate reality police state. People are being taken away because they are infected. Abigail (Tinatin Dalakishvili ) as a young girl sees her father (Eddie Marsan) hauled off in the middle of the night. Mask wearing inspectors operate as law enforcement as they seek out infected people. After a bit, Abigail discovers an underground community of "infected" people, people who have special magical powers.
This film is a blend of Harry Potter, X-Men, and Stalin's purge. The dubbing was Japanese bad. The film had a lot of potential but falls short of a classic. There doesn't seem to be a target audience. The picture is too dark for the younger crowd and about half way through I heard something that sound like the "F" word. It has a heroine, the new norm in film making but the dialogue was really hokey. It was too hokey for an adult crowd.
Was this another gay "X-Men" people are different and okay film or am I reading too much into it? They were lead by a fairy (with a GPS) to break through a barrier.

Hollow yet beautiful
No I'm not describing myself (I think),but rather this movie. Now of course you may feel different about the hollow part, but there is no argument on the pretty part! This does look very good (and that is no pun concerning the actors involved). If that plays a role for you.
Unfortunately there is not a big connection for the viewer. Yes of course we will root (most likely) for the good guys in this one and hate the bad guys. But a bond is not something I see building for most who watch this. It is stylized, it looks good, it has a decent story (scrambled together with bits and pieces from other movies, paying homage to them I reckon would be the way to say it),but something is missing to make this actually remarkable
Different fantasy
I liked it. It was different than the usual "Hollywood" type of material. Interesting idea.
