Less is more

This simple but very survival movie about a man stuck on a sinking boat is very engrossing and watchable. Who needs grand over blown special effects and fake CGI when you have a good story - it holds attention from beginning to end.

Direction is good - you can almost feel the heat, thirst, waves etc that have to be endured.

Would liked to have a bit more before and after about how he got out there and after being rescued.

Feel for the elderly Redford getting all wet and filming this movie must have been physically demanding.

Good and quite memorable.

Exemplary lost-at-sea story

ALL IS LOST is an exemplary lost-at-sea story that features a winning performance from the intensely likeable Robert Redford, delivering the goods in a virtually dialogue-free performance. It's just him in a boat, struggling to survive against everything nature throws at him, and yet there's never a dull moment or indeed a slow one. A combination of winning direction and fine acting elevate this film to the status of a mini-classic, and it's far ahead of bigger budget rivals like LIFE OF PI which resort to CGI and clever-clever storytelling to work. ALL IS LOST begins the conflict in the very first second and carries on right until the end. The realism is incredibly high, the drama endless, and the viewer is caught up from the get go. A great film.

Robert Redford is still doing good work

Robert Redford plays a man sailing solo on the open ocean when his boat is hit by a floating shipping container full of sneakers. It leaves a hole in his hull and his radio broken. His boat deteriorates as he struggles against the elements.

This is a very minimalist movie with very little dialog. There isn't as much tension as one would expect from this drama. Basically everything goes wrong. He does everything within his power but it is usually not enough. There isn't anything surprising in the movie. The biggest take away from this movie is that Robert Redford can still move. He is not too old to do these kinds of movies. It does need more interesting surprises from writer/director J.C. Chandor.
