I am so glad that I checked this out. This is a slow burner that delivers. It is well acted and the story is well constructed. There is a great amount of tension throughout and while it doesn't have a lot of dialogue or backstory, the atmosphere totally draws you in and keeps you interested. The best part of this is believing you have it all figured out then being smacked with something you couldn't, or at least I couldn't, see coming. That qualifies it as awesome for me.

If you like thrillers, check it out. If you are a mom, check it out. It is so worth it.

In the bonus track of the DVD of "Angel of Mine," the director Kim Farrant described the film as a thriller with the theme of "intuition." The intuition drives a desperate mother to the brink of madness in her search for a daughter believed lost in a hospital fire.

In one of the most bizarre moments of the film, the protagonist Lizzie has abducted the seven-year-old child Lola and taken her on a boat ride. With a clear sense of danger implied for the child, there is a long description by Lizzie about the area above the lip of the child. That "indent," which is a description of harelip, is the handiwork of angels as a reminder of lost memories. After all of Lizzie's labor in defining the special indent, it does not help to jog the kid's memory. Little Lola has no memory of Lizzie as her lost mom.

Another dynamic of the film described by the director in the extras segment was the opposition of two women, who become powerful forces as antagonists, protecting their turf as mothers. The two actresses playing Lizzie and Lola's mom Claire were outstanding in taking the audience on an experience that the director called "a journey of unraveling."

There was also a nice touch to the photography that was described by Farrant as a "feminine" style. The uses of deep focus camera work, soft curves, and muted color palettes combined for an aesthetic that had the effect of making "pain exquisite."

While the pacing of the film was sluggish and the melodrama excessive with scenes like Lizzie sneaking into Claire's house and sleeping in little Lola's closet, this was nonetheless compelling as a "case study" related to the broad subject of motherhood. The performances were top notch with the two lead women and the two self-effacing males as their husbands. Despite any shortcomings, the film leaves an indelible impression due to the extremity of the situation and the emotional anguish conveyed from start to finish.

With a movie like this, there is only one of two things that can be real. Saying you knew all along is therefor invalid. You're not a genius for figuring it out or worse pretending to knew all along. Whatever you guessed and there will be guessing, this is made with quite the attention to detail and the actors really give it their all - on the brink of madness.

It is tough to like anyone in particular, apart from the kids. Kids mostly are pure and can not be held to any morality standard. You can feel the pain of the adults, no matter what your perspective is ... how far would you go and who should stop you? And who would you be in that equation? A lot of interesting questions raised ... mostly for effect and suspense of course
