Alex Louis (Jeff Roop) sees himself as an outdoorsman. He brings his city dwelling girlfriend Jenn (Missy Peregrym) to a provincial park. They rent a canoe for an excursion of a few days. He is eager to go to the Blackfoot Trails despite being closed early for the end of the season. They encounter Brad (Eric Balfour) who leaves the couple uncertain. Alex insists on taking Jenn into the deep woods without a map and they are soon lost. That's when they face a black bear.
This is a little boring for the first hour. Eric Balfour is not quite threatening enough. It's also hard to get involved with this random couple especially with an off-putting Alex. After an hour, there is a pretty good non-CGI bear attack. The real bear looks good and threatening. It's a lot of shaky camera and sharp edits. All of it is very effective. I would have prefer this earlier in the movie and have more of Jenn in survival mode. That would have made this a more note-worthy movie like a low budget Revenant. I would also get rid of Brad and encounter signs of the bear much earlier. While the bear attack is scary, the whole movie could be so much more thrilling and scary.

Plot summary
An urban couple go camping in the Canadian wilderness - where unimaginable beauty sits alongside our most primal fears. Alex (Jeff Roop) is a seasoned outdoorsman while Jenn (Missy Peregrym),a corporate lawyer, is not. After much convincing, and against her better judgment, she agrees to let him take her deep into a Provincial Park to one of his favorite spots - the secluded Blackfoot Trail. On their first night, deep in the forest, they have an unsettling encounter with Brad (Eric Balfour),a strange alpha male with eyes for Jenn who may or may not be following them. Alex's desire to quickly reach Blackfoot Trail only intensifies. They push further and further into the woods, Alex stubbornly insisting that he remembers the way. After three days their path disappears; they are hopelessly lost. Without food or water, they struggle to find their way back, the harsh conditions bringing out the best and worst in them, pushing their already fragile relationship to the breaking point. When they realize they have entered a bear's territory, being lost suddenly becomes the least of their problems. Terror, horror, will, and survival become paramount.

boring first hour
THIS IS THE WAY
If you happen to peak at the cover while looking at the title, you know it is about an encounter with a bear, that is not going to be pretty. Alex (Jeff Roop) and his girlfriend Jenn (Missy Peregrym) go camping late in the season on a trail he knew as a kid. He doesn't need a map so guess where this goes. It is just a matter of time before our couple who don't know how to play dead, encounter a bear.
Now the question of who survives and who doesn't is the only mystery. I was once told you don't have to be the fastest person when running away from a bear, you just can't be the slowest (pushing someone down and tripping are fouls to consider). Rape whistles are not really effective, but if that is all you got...I'm sure some people who are falling flap their arms too.
Of course our couple can't just run into a bear. It has to be introduced slowly to build the tension. The encounter was more like a shot of a circus bear yawning with a dubbed roar then show some blood. It was low budget graphic. Not exciting.
It is a fair film. I wish they had created a better couple instead of a boring woman and a sad sack.
Guide: F-bomb. No sex. Male butt nudity.
Carry on camping..... with a twist.
A couple go off the beaten track in the glorious Canadian outback, and fall into the path of a savage predator.
It's sadly based on a true story, so I'll keep my comments respectful. First of all, it's a very good film, it's packed with tension, it had me gripped, and on the edge of my seat.
It seems that every single time people face peril from an animal in a movie it's a shark, the Black bear is a very different creature altogether, I always thought they were shy, what do I know.
Missy Peregrym is the standout, I think she was excellent throughout. Strong special effects, very brutal.
I politely ask why on Earth people visit such areas, beautiful, but containing danger.
A gripping watch, 7/10.
