Bad Samaritan

Bad Samaritan is a B movie dark thriller with enough twists and plenty of lapses in logic.

Set in Portland, Oregon. Sean (Robert Sheehan) and his friend Derek (Carlito Olivero) are valet parkers in a restaurant. As the guests dine, they use the sat nav to go to their houses and rob it.

Sean goes to rob's Cale (David Tennant) house, an obnoxious rich guy who drove to the restaurant in a Maserati. Sean discovers a terrified young woman bound and gagged.

Sean goes to the police who do not believe his story. Cale discovering what has happened seeks to make his life a misery. It piques his psychopathic tendencies.

Director Dean Devlin manages to find some humour with some mild torture porn. It is not Hitchcock and too tame to be Hostel.

Tennant's American accent is a bit distracting. It lapses into silliness too often.

Thumbs down for this weak-written thriller

BAD SAMARITAN is an astonishingly poor thriller in which a young man attempts to burgle a seemingly ordinary house only to discover something extraordinary inside. Yes, it's another version of THE COLLECTOR, a popular type of plot these days, but this is a film that goes down the dark thriller route rather than out-and-out horror. It's saddled with bad writing throughout, throwing in the cliches and weak characters and not giving the viewer much to enjoy otherwise. The villain's activities become increasingly preposterous as the running time progresses, and David Tennant is quite awful in the part, which doesn't bode well for his forthcoming turn as serial killer Dennis Nilsen. Thumbs down!

nice thriller

Sean Falco (Robert Sheehan) is a good guy at heart with girlfriend Riley. Secretly, he's a small time thief with his buddy Derek Sandoval. They use their valet jobs to sneak into unsuspecting diners' homes. One such diner is ill-tempered Cale Erendreich (David Tennant). When Sean breaks into Cale's home, he discovers a woman chained up inside. He tries to do the right thing which has its repercussions.

This is an old fashion thriller and I like it as such. There are a couple of things that I like about the characters and a couple of things that I see possible improvements. I do like Sean's unabashed need to save the girl and I also like Derek's realistic need to save himself. I like both performances. As for Tennant, he is perfectly creepy. He does need to kidnap the girlfriend. That's the big opportunity missed by the movie. Instead, it becomes a misunderstanding which leaves her looking clueless. On the other hand, I don't mind the clueless police detective. He has reasons to be clueless. It's nice to have a smart FBI agent although she has a few too many backups. They're trying a little too hard. It's more intense to have Agent Fuller alone struggling inside the system. Overall, I like Sean as a smart normal thief who has morality which drives him and drives this movie.
