In the gentrifying streets of Oakland, Collin (Daveed Diggs) is in his last days of probation. He is trying to go straight but his whigger best friend Miles (Rafael Casal) keeps pulling him back. They work together as moving men. In fact, his two months in jail is due to an incident that involved both men. In the background, he is hounded by the fear of the police especially after witnessing a cop (Ethan Embry) shooting an escaping suspect in the back.

There are moments when I fear the movie could have jumped a shark. At the beginning, the annoying friend really frustrated me. It could be helpful if he is more funnier and less whiggy. He starts off almost like a cartoon character. It does improve as their relationship becomes a main focus and it is examined seriously. Once it becomes serious, the movie improves. It really digs into the modern racial relationships.

The film takes place in bi-racial Oakland. Collin (Daveed Diggs) is on probation going on one year. He is a good guy at heart. He works with his friend Miles (Rafael Casal ) at a local moving company. While driving back to his probation house, slightly past his curfew, he witnesses a police shooting. He can not contradict the officer's story without admitting his minor probation violation.

The drama has some comedy elements as we watch Collin having to deal with Miles, who acts "ghetto." Not an overpowering statement on police/racial issues, but entertaining nonetheless.

As a white Englishman who's never even been to Frisco let alone Oakland it's difficult to empathise with anything going on here yet clearly it is a labor of love and the performances, especially the two leads, are exceptional. It's had a low-key release here in the UK and as I write it is playing at only two theatres in London and at the showing I attended there was only one other person in the audience. Whilst it would certainly help if you were a viewer with even an entry-level knowledge of the themes it is definitely worth seeing.
