Not bad at all

In fact this movie is enjoyable with suspense, action and kick-ass Noomi Rapace to round it all off. The story starts off well but weakens at the end. Nevertheless it provides a well earned hour and a half of pleasant entertainment.

It deserves a rating of 7, more then the average rating of most respondents to date. Just sit back to enjoy and don't be critical about the flaws along the way!

Generally okay, but hugely flawed

CLOSE is yet another Netflix-made action thriller with Noomi Rapace in the lead role; she seems to be carving out a niche for herself as an action heroine and she's certainly convincingly tough in the role. This one's a low budget offering that tells a hackneyed tale about Rapace's bodyguard protecting a spoilt heiress from nefarious bad guys hell-bent on kidnapping and then murder. It plays out entirely as expected, but seems to have been made on a shoestring and I think it's fair to say that all of the good bits were put in the trailer. Rapace is excellent but the supporting players less impressive, aside from ROME's Indira Varma, who is reliably good. I'm a big fan of action and this film's handful of such moments are familiar from the likes of the Bourne franchise but still generally well handled. I do think that Vicky Jewson was a poor choice for director as she fumbles key moments and rushes others. The writing also feels sloppy and rushed at times; don't get me started on that oh-so-dramatic non-ending.

Sam Carlson (Noomi Rapace) is a harden bodyguard. After saving her reporter client in a war zone, her next assignment is spoiled heiress Zoe Tanner (Sophie Nélisse). Zoe has just inherited her late father's massive mining conglomerate which is run by her stepmother Rima Hassine (Indira Varma).

This is a familiar thriller except Sam is usually a dude. The gender switch does provide an interesting opportunity but the story takes one step back with every step forward. First thing first, the title does nothing. At most, it reminds me of Closer. It could have been At Close Range, Closing In, or Danger Close. The title is stupid and says nothing. Next, Sam needs to be smarter. As soon as the situation hits the fan, she should ask Zoe about any enemies and Rima should be on the list. That brings up Rima who is used as the Red Herring. There needs to be an exposition on how Rima could get Zoe's shares upon her death. As it stands, I never believed the Rima detour since she has no money reason for the attack. The sequence of events needs better forethought. The villains are obvious from the start. There are also a couple of convenient encounters that are too convenient. I do like the fight in the ship's holding tank but it could be more action packed. This is close but not quite.
