Come Play (2020) is a movie we recently saw in theatres (we were excited to go to the movies again while we can). The storyline focuses on a boy who downloads an app that tells the story of Larry who wants to "come to the other side" and make friends. The little boy and his family's electronic devises become a target for Larry to come to their reality and cause death and destruction. This movie is directed by Jacob Chase in his directorial debut and stars Azhy Robertson (Marriage Story),Gillian Jacobs (The Box),John Gallagher Jr (10 Cloverfield Lane) and Winslow Fegley (Timmy Failure). The storyline for this picture was very well rolled out and the special effects and horror elements were thorough and well done. The characters, especially the family and children, were wonderfully written and delivered by the cast. The ending was good and I loved Larry. My only complaint was they could have shown Larry more in the movie. Overall this is a fun new horror film that is worth your time. I'd score this a 7/10.

The games monsters play
How "friendly" can a monster really be? Something that obviously depends - and can only be answered from case to case - no pun intended. Generally speaking it does seem to pay off to have done a short film of your idea ... and if that sparks interest or generates buzz, you can go ahead and make a feature film out of it. Well it has proven to work with a few other cases too - and again no pun intended.
That being said, this is genuinely creepy and dark and creates a lot of really interesting and scary moments. So much so, that I wasn't sure if I even wanted to continue watching. Sometimes you have to be in the mood for a slow yet effective horror movie. Because while you could attest this having jump scares, it is the mood that it creates and the story around the monster it tells (one I at least had never heard about, so extra points for that) ... it may not be perfect, but it also does not copy paste things from something existing.
Of course certain cliches will play a role, but this still stands on its own two feet (or crawls on four ... but let's not get into too many details). Horror is a genre that does spawn a lot of movies - and therefor sometimes gets a bad rep - this movie is able to pull you back in. Visually, emotionally (acting) and sound design wise, this has really good (production) values. With an interesting take on what other movies do with their endings ... this sort of goes against that trend ... which is refreshing to see even if it may weird you out a little. Come play indeed.
Who are you?
Oliver (Azhy Robertson) is a special needs child who is goofy looking like the kid from "Witness." He uses an app to communicate, one that is haunted by an inter dimensional slender man named "Larry." At 40 minutes into the film, mom believes him. Larry just wants a friend.
Not since Chipper Jones was at bat in Philadelphia has the cries of "Larry" been so haunting. The story also includes issues with the parents which I never understood. They just seem to argue because it was in the script. Oliver is also picked on at school. There are other films with "demons" who inch their way into children by being a friend. This one didn't go through the stages of first wanting the friend only to find out it is bad.
Guide: No swearing, sex or nudity.
