A little different from the usual slasher fare

I'm in two minds about CRY_WOLF. I appreciate the fact that it was a film trying to do something different in breathing new life and style into a rather tired genre, but looking back I'm not a fan of the look-at-us-aren't-we-clever type stuff and the rather ridiculous triple-twist ending, which sees any believability the film may have had remaining go right out of the window. Saying that, I did find this fairly enjoyable for the most part, with some decent in-peril moments as a ski-mask-wearing psycho stalks a college and menaces the characters via Internet messaging (keeping up with the times, you see).

It's also a film with a better cast than you might expect, with some not-bad turns from up-and-coming actors. Julian Morris (DONKEY PUNCH) is the central character, a British export through whose eyes we see the plot play out. I found something oddly likable about this guy, even though his accent sounds phoney (despite being genuine). Lindy Booth, as the dodgily-named Dodger, the girl who he falls for, also gives a great performance. Most eyes will be on Jon Bon Jovi's supporting role as one of the college teachers. For a rock star, I have to say that he was surprisingly decent in the part they gave him in this movie.

Anyway, the running time flies past readily enough and it's nice to watch a film that relies on suspenseful situations and atmosphere, rather than just overdone gore sequences. The filmmakers commit one or two cardinal errors (such as showing the murders right at the beginning of the film – a real fail, that one) and the head-scratching stuff at the climax is frankly unbelievable, but for the most part I was caught up in the story and intrigued about what was going to happen next. A masterpiece this isn't, but if want a little more intelligence than you'll find in the typical slasher fare, you might just like it.

Entertaining Tale of Manipulation

When the troubled Owen (Julian Morris) joins the private Westlake Preparatory Academy, he meets the senior student Dodger (Lindy Booth),who invites him to participate of a game of lies with her friends. The objective of the lying game is to avoid suspicious, manipulate the friends and eliminate the enemies. The group decides to play a prank in all the mates of the high school, using a recent unsolved murder of a student in the campus. They send e-mails to all colleagues describing fake crimes with the same characteristics of the young woman committed by a serial killer called "The Wolf". Their teacher Rich Walker (Jon Bon Jovi) advises Owen how serious this joke could be. When the students of their group start to disappear, Owen, Dodger and Tom realize that the criminal became real.

"Cry_Wolf "was a great surprise for me, being an entertaining tale of manipulation. The engaging story has many unpredictable twists and a surprising conclusion. The promising teen cast has great performances, highlighting the gorgeous Lindy Booth, Julian Morris and Jared "Supernatural" Padalecki, besides the name of Jon Bon Jovi. My vote is seven.

Don't cry ...

it's not that bad! ;o) Quite the opposite! Despite the fact, that the movie itself thinks it's more original than it is, it's still quite good. For a horror movie that is of course. But that is what this movie is. So why judge it like it a film noir? It's about the scares and obviously the "deaths" ...

And that's something this movie achieves. It would've even be better, if it didn't insist on an ending like this ... I won't say what, so I won't spoiler it for you, although some might guess it beforehand, while watching it. So while the movie is suspenseful throughout (the beginning scene is really great, too),the ending kind of ruins most of it.
