Catherine Keener, long an established name in indie cinema, is currently starring in two very good movies. One is "Please Give", in which she plays the lead role, and the other is "Cyrus", in which she plays a supporting role.
The latter focuses on John (John C. Reilly),a divorcée looking for a new relationship. When he happens to meet Molly (Marisa Tomei) at a party, they start up a relationship. Only thing is, Molly's son Cyrus (Jonah Hill) immediately begins undermining the relationship. And I mean in kind of a nasty way.
In a movie like "Cyrus", it's hard not to be able to see things through the eyes of each character. John is looking for a new relationship, while Cyrus is suspicious of a man trying to enter his mom's life, and Molly only knows about what she sees happening (namely in the wedding scene). This all adds up to a movie that I definitely recommend. Directors Jay and Mark Duplass made a truly good film here.
Oh, and Catherine Keener plays John's ex.

Plot summary
With John's social life at a standstill and his ex-wife about to get remarried, a down on his luck divorcé finally meets the woman of his dreams, only to discover she has another man in her life - her son. Still single seven years after the breakup of his marriage, John has all but given up on romance. But at the urging of his ex-wife and best friend Jamie, John grudgingly agrees to join her and her fiancé Tim at a party. To his and everyone else's surprise, he actually manages to meet someone: the gorgeous and spirited Molly. Their chemistry is immediate. The relationship takes off quickly but Molly is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond John's house. Perplexed, he follows her home and discovers the other man in Molly's life: her son, Cyrus. A 21-year-old new age musician, Cyrus is his mom's best friend and shares an unconventional relationship with her. Cyrus will go to any lengths to protect Molly and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone, especially John. Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love-and it appears only one man can be left standing when it's over.

Genuinely to the point
The movie said 'comedy', 'drama', and 'romance'. I would strike out the comedy part, because the movie isn't really all that funny, though drama and romance holds true. I was expecting it to be a laugh-out-funny type of movie, but it wasn't, but I wasn't disappointed with the movie either.
John C. Reilly was so amazing in this movie, and I thought he was so well-cast for the role of John. There was just something about his acting that really made his character stand out like someone you could relate to, someone that had the same things going on as you do yourself. And that was really good acting. Marisa Tomei also did a good job with her role of Molly. However, playing opposite of Reilly, Jonah Hill, in the role of Cyrus, did a good job as well. There was really some chemistry and tension brewing between John and Cyrus, and the two actors made that seem very real and believable.
The movie isn't a fast paced one, but it gets to where it needs to be without being a drag or boring. And I found the story told here to be quite captivating and compelling. And it was really a story that you could sink yourself into. I am sure everyone could see a little of themselves in one or more of the characters in the movie.
Now what really ticked me off about the movie was the camera, with the constant panning back and forth, zooming and going back out. It seemed like the camera man was operating a camera for the very first time in his life. It was like a tourist video from some Thai resort. It was annoying and frustrating to look at. And it dragged the movie experience down a notch for me.
If you like movies with real life drama in it, then "Cyrus" is definitely worth checking out, because it is so beautifully acted. You just have to get past the constant fumbling with the camera zoom button.
And it was my first acquaintance with Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass movies, and this one was actually a rather good movie. So hats off to you gentlemen for bringing us a movie of this caliber.
Uncomfortably weird
John (John C. Reilly) is in a rut. His ex-wife and best friend Jamie (Catherine Keener) is getting remarried after 7 years. She pushes him to go to a party and he meets the wonderful Molly (Marisa Tomei). They have terrific chemistry together. However Molly never brings her to her home and he follows her. He finds her son Cyrus (Jonah Hill) living with her. He's almost 22 or 21, a real mamma's boy and her bff. He is territorial and passive aggressive in trying to push John out.
While I understand where this movie is coming from, I didn't find it at all funny. Jonah Hill is super creepy weird unlikeable, and not the fun wacky quirky. He is uncomfortable and bordering on unwatchable. He has so much buried anger and it is never allowed to be laugh at by making it wacky. It is simply a tiring thing to watch. As for the chemistry between Reilly and Tomei, it's functional. They are very charming actors and I like them. Their relationship isn't really the star of the movie. I admire the daring characterization from Jonah Hill, but I just didn't like it.
