Daphne you are a legend, wherever you are.
Offended much (?)
Are you easily offende? Do you consider yourself someone not able to laugh at absurdities of life and circumstances but rather being a fighter for what is right and good? And I am seriously asking, because this may not be something you want to watch if that is the case.
Now the special drew big controversy because of one topic/subject matter. And Dave I would say was fully aware of it. Because it's not like he is not using language and making jokes right from the start. Some may feel attacked by those - like when he mixes serious things that happened and still happen - violence against Asians has risen for example due to the Corona Virus "origin" ... he makes a joke about his body and his immune system, that some may consider borderline racist and fueling anti-vaxxers and their desperate "fight".
But that is what I (and of course many others as is evident by the rating here) consider the genius of Dave Chappelle! He really does not shy away from taking punches - but he also gets emotional. He is a human and he is openly admitting on being flawed. When he calls himself a ...phobic or tells us what he did at a certain time ... realizing himself it was not the best choice to make ... that's human. And all the while he is able to make us laugh - but also care. Not just for him, but others. He makes it his fight to show certain things in society - he doesn't claim to have the solution for any of it - but it sure is important to point things out.
Going against "wokeness" is not a bad thing in my book. But it is a "dangerous" thing with people being cancelled left and right. Well certain people deserve it, but with the outrage machine impossible to stop, there will be victims too. Just the fact that I point this out will upset people. The fact of the matter is, that whatever you say, someone will be offended. You're either too nice or too aggressive or something else. You should always be true to yourself, while also acknowleding and respecting others and their feelings of course. But that is a journey and we all should be allowed to make mistakes.
So while this is a dope comedy special (I hope the word dope is still being used),it is also a mirror to society in many respects. And ends with a story that is uplifting, devestating, exhilarating and somewhat hopeful alltogether. Now that is quite the amazing accomplishment.
Funny, irreverent and subversive, as good comedy should be
A Netflix-produced special, capturing a Dave Chappelle stand-up comedy routine in Detroit.
Continuing in the series of Netflix-produced comedy specials by Dave Chappelle, this instalment is very similar in content, quality and vibe to what came before. Funny, irreverent, subversive and distinctly un-PC but if you know Dave Chappelle style of comedy, you know that's what you're going to get.
Not as funny as Chappelle's Show or his earlier stuff in general though. While still very edgy and un-PC, his earlier stuff was a bit more sophisticated and better-developed and the punchlines were more powerful. His early stuff was off-the-charts brilliant though so a bit unfair to compare this to that. In addition, being a long-time Chappelle fan, the novelty has probably worn off a bit for me and I know what to expect.
