This is an excellent, fun, fast moving cops 'n robbers car chase movie. Susan George is great (she's done a few car chases hasn't she, I'm thinking Eyewitness?) I do wonder why she hasn't done too many movies. Adam Roarke is good too as Peter Fonda's sidekick.
If you like fast cars and surprise endings, this is a good movie to watch. The surprise ending to this is so unexpected, nobody could've seen it coming. the most surprisingest surprise ending.

Plot summary
Larry Rayder is an aspiring NASCAR driver; Deke Sommers is mechanic. As they feel they collectively are the best, the only thing that is holding them back is money to build the best vehicle possible. As such, they decide to rob a supermarket's office of the money in its safe to pursue their dream. On the most part, their robbery is successful, although their plan breaks down in its end phase, which doesn't allow them as much getaway time as they wanted. Another problem they face is an unexpected third person in their getaway, Larry's one-night stand Mary Coombs, who doesn't like the fact that Larry ran off on her, although she eventually also says that she doesn't want any of the money. With a police scanner and two-way radio in their souped-up Dodge Charger, they try to outrun the police, who have an identification of their vehicle, and a general description of the three. The police pursuit is led by the tenacious Sheriff Everett Franklin, who knows he and his team can catch them, but also knows that the three may be able to get out of the state to "freedom" through a grove of walnut trees, which Larry, Deke and Mary may or may not know. At every literal and figurative turn, Larry needs to show his superiority as a driver, while trying to ditch Mary, who is a little more resourceful in staying with them than he anticipates.

Great movie
Product of its era
DIRTY MARY, CRAZY LARRY is a film that cashes in on the '70s-era craze for road movies and in particular car chase flicks. This decade saw the likes of VANISHING POINT and GONE IN 60 SECONDS wowing audiences with their depictions of high-speed pursuit, something that this movie is keen to work with.
The result is only semi-successful, however, and the reason for its slightly lacklustre playing out is purely down to the script. This is the kind of dialogue that must already have been cheesy and dated on first release, with the characters spouting unbelievable 'counter culture' style lines as they 'stick it to the man'. It makes the whole thing feel incredibly dated and not necessarily in a good way.
Still, there's stuff here to be enjoyed, not least another one of those laid-back stoner type performances from Peter Fonda. Watch out for Vic Morrow, chewing the scenery with relish, although you also need to be warned: this film features copious amounts of Susan George, giving the worst approximation of an American accent that I've yet to hear. Imagine Keanu in BRAM STOKER'S Dracula; yep, it is that bad.
As expected, the film features plenty of car chases and some good stunt crashes that reminded me of the likes of LIVE AND LET DIE. It's no classic, to be sure, but it's not bad as a fitting product of its era and that ending still packs one hell of a wallop.
fun chase movie
Driver Larry Rayder (Peter Fonda) and mechanic Deke Sommers (Adam Roarke) rob a grocery store by kidnapping the manager (Roddy McDowall)'s family. Larry's one night stand wildcat Mary Coombs (Susan George) pushes her way into the criminal duo.
This is a fine car chase movie. It's got the two prerequisites. It's got the big personalities and it's got the car stunts. Peter Fonda is a given. Susan George has the unpredictability of her character. There is real instability within the volatile chemistry. The action starts with what is probably a mistake in the stunt. The windshield took a real hit as the car slams into oncoming traffic. It's always shocking when unexpected danger comes out of the screen. This is not necessarily a high class affair but it has some fun stunts and charismatic actors.
