I really loved this movie! It was so nice to watch a movie that wasn't full of sex scenes, cursing and violence. It was so lovely to watch sorting with a bit of depth to the storyline and really moved your heart. You almost felt like you were walking the journey with her, cheering her on and emotionally connecting with her. It was powerful how they even mirrored her regrets with marrying the wrong person to the male character Jonny realise that he was also in a relationship with someone who was also controlling. It was really moving in every way!

Edie (Sheila Hancock) has spent years caring for her infirm husband who had a stroke. A few years after his death, her daughter is looking to send Edie to an old people's home.

The 83 year old Edie plans to climb Mount Suilven in the Scottish Highlands. Something she wanted to do years ago with her father. Her controlling husband put a stop to it.

Arriving in Inverness she literally bumps into Jonny (Kevin Guthrie) who coincidentally also runs a local outdoor/camping shop. His assistant coaxes Edie to take Jonny as a guide, a lucrative deal for Jonny.

The films boasts great scenery of the Highlands. It holds few surprises with its odd couple pairing. Edie is reluctant to accept help at first and Jonny finds Edie cantankerous.

In essence it is about two people who have been tied down. Edie by her late husband. Jonny by his girlfriend who wants him to take out a large loan for his struggling business which he is not sure about.

Edie is a pleasant film that treads a well worn path. It is well performed by Hancock and Guthrie but it needed a bolder story. This is too safe.

I will admit from the outset that I am a Scot, so this had two things going for it from the start. Firstly, the cute, cheeky Kevin Guthrie and secondly the stunning scenery from the northernmost parts of Scotland. The story? Well it is a gentle affair that sees Sheila Hancock assume the title role as an 80-odd year old lady whom, after many years of suburban life looking after her (lately deceased) incapacitated husband, discovers an old postcard and next thing she is setting out to climb "Suilven" - a 2,400 foot, rather barren looking sandstone mountain. On alighting her train in Inverness she encounters (quite literally) "Jonny" (Guthrie) and his girlfriend "Fiona" (Amy Manson). The young man drives his rather grumpy new friend the not inconsiderable distance to her hotel in a town where he also lives - and luckily, due to a mishap with her booking, she ends up sharing his digs. What now ensues is an engaging tale of the two becoming friends, and of her gritty determination to get to the top of this hill. Sure, it's got loads of holes in the plot, but there is a chemistry between the two. Guthrie is charm on a stick, Hancock almost looks like she could be portraying her real self, and there is never any doubt as to the outcome (though - like the path up "Suilven" - it's not always straightforward). The cinematography is is glorious and though it swipes at the small-town mentality of some of his fellow citizens in a slightly contrived fashion - it's largely an amiable feel good movie with the two at the top of the bill doing fine.
