I found it captivating and well done. I'm 69 years old and not a fool and this had all the earmarks of a very good movie due to the fact it didn't need gore, violence, sex and unreal cgi to make it that way.

Why the bad reviews?
Nifty sci-fi outing
A group of longtime friends find an otherworldly alien organism in the woods. They must protect said organism from the FBI as they race against time to uncover its secret.
Writer/director Paul Salamoff relates the engrossing story at a steady pace, takes time to flesh out the characters, and maintains a serious, sincere, and thoughtful tone throughout. The sound acting from the capable cast helps a lot, with especially praiseworthy work from Luke Hemsworth as sympathetic cripple Will Dawkins, Glenn Keough as take-charge dude Brent, Christopher Showerman as the dim-witted Johnny Brandt, Cheryl Texiera as the perky Teresa Fleming, Vincent M. Ward as the easygoing Marcus Doyle, and Tom Atkins as amiable old college professor Westlake. Wendy Davis and Peter Folden provide amusing comic relief as a pair of radically contrasting FBI agents. The surprise upbeat ending proves to be quite moving. A neat little flick.
Drivel with little to redeem it...
A bunch of pals spot what they think is a meteorite landing nearby. When they go to investigate they soon discover that it has a survivor - and one with tentacles too! Are they kindly, well-meaning tentacles, though? That's the question for wheelchair bound "Will" (Luke Hemsworth) and his friends including terminally ill scientist "Prof Westlake" (Tom Atkins who just reminded me of Dick van Dyke for much of the time). Whether it's benign or not, the whole thing is reminiscent of a bad "Blake's 7" episode, with a glowing sponge acting as the visitor and some equally inanimate acting from the assembled humans who vacillate between hysterical and pensive with alarming dexterity. The dialogue is banal, lots of contrived drama to compensate for a seriously uninteresting alien beastie and the ending - well that is something from an early draft of a Stephen King novel. All been done before, sadly - nothing new or entertaining to watch here.
