It's like two totally different movies thrown together! Both halves were good...but together they just didn't work.

"Fanaa" is an incredibly frustrating film to watch. The first half is magnificent--very romantic and very enjoyable. The second half, though not bad, was so incredibly different in tempo and style that it really did not fit together with the first half. In fact, I almost wish the movie had just ended in the middle!

When the story begins, Zooni (Kajol) is going on a trip to Delhi with some friends. Her parents are worried...after all, she is blind. But they also know they need to let her grow and experience the world, so they reluctantly send her. Soon after arriving, the group of young ladies are met by their tour guide--a vivacious man named Rehan (Aamir Khan). He is clearly a ladies man and the women can't help but like him. Most taken by him is Zooni. Now you aren't sure about Rehan. Is he sincere or is she just another conquest for this playboy?

Soon you have your answer. Despite telling her he's no good, Rehan professes his love and the pair plan on getting married. However, when her parent arrive in Delhi for the wedding, Rehan is not there....and they soon receive word that he was killed in a Kashimiri Separatist bombing.

Believe it or not, there is MUCH more of the movie to follow. Oddly, however, while the first portion was all romance, the second half is more like some sort of James Bond film!!! To me, this didn't work well--especially because this super-agent practically has X-Men powers!!! No one is THIS tough nor this bullet-proof! What exactly am I talking about? Well, I really cannot say...it would spoil the film. Suffice to say, I adored the first half and would score it a 9. The second half, at best 5. And overall, still a 5 just because parts one and two simply don't work as a whole.

Below average

Aamir Khan is a perfectionist but sometimes his films aren't that good for e.g. MANGAL PANDEY, FANAA

FANAA has a good plot but the film is too clichéd

The first half is too long, boring

the entire shayari bit and the love story is damn clichéd

The interval point raises expectations but the way Aamir kills people in the snow.etc is too much but yet forgiven The film drags in the second half too and scenes get boring but yet the entire Aamir- Kajol track in the 2nd half is handled well even the climax but Rishi's death scene is too funny

Direction by Kunal Kohli is good in parts overall bad Music is good the only problem was DES RANGILA as Kajol danced like a girl who could see

Aamir acts very well as the smooth operator and his helplessness is well handled by him but in the first half as the romantic lover he tends to be annoying and looks too old Kajol is good in her part in the second half and emotes very well though her role is too childish in first half

Amongst rest Shruti is good Rishi is excellent in his part, Kirron Kher is okay the child is alright Shiny is wasted

The most appropriately hauntingly beautiful film to welcome Kajol back into the game!

Welcome Back Kajol! And thank you for bringing it like it has never been brought before. Thanks for taking it up a notch and showing the rest what they need to do in order to be as good as you! Okay, let's just assume that it isn't a copy of anything, Fanaa was a very heartfelt and very well made film. It's directed by Kunal Kohli the same thinking cap that brought you Hum Tum, and I have to say that when Fanaa began, I felt like I was watching a weird kind of Hum Tum 2! I mean it had: The token "Mukherjee" {This time Kajol}, The token "Khan" {This time Aamir}, Rishi Kapoor and Kiron Kher are back again and this time they're a couple., The song in the rain in "Slo-Mo" Intro to the sexual nature of the characters scene. The Landmark Dialogues that repeat over and over again throughout the course of the film. The chanced second chance.

And of course it also had the Classic Yashraj throw-backs: 1. The reference to past film (s) "DDLJ" 2. The slightest act of sexual intercourse and baby will make three 3. Landmark Dialogue 4. A Kher must be present 5. Incredibly sad songs that are hauntingly beautiful. Just to mention a few.

Fanaa is a film about a young blind woman (played by Kajol Mukherjee Devgan) who meets the man of her dreams by chance when she goes to Delhi. She knows right away that this is the man for her, but the man (played by Aamir Khan) only believes in needs, therefore a woman in his life would be like just another city he is visiting and soon to leave. Zooni (Kajol) on the other hand believes in love and she makes this clear. Blink and you'll miss Lara Dutta's cameo in the film just before Zooni's remark. Zooni's friends (some of whom have really funny names like Fatty and Bobo. Only in India people, only in India!) especially (Bobo I think) warn Zooni about the shady character she is falling in love with, but of course Zooni eventually wins over their support. The most tragic thing about Zooni is that she cannot say that she was not warned. There is a point in time where Rehan (Khan) actually stops going to see but she chases after him until she wins him back into her life. One thing leads to another and they become lovers, when time comes for Zooni to go back to her parents (played by Rishi Kapoor and Kiron Kher) she finds it hard to say goodbye and in a very 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' way, Rehan rescues her from the train and takes her to his house. A few days later, they are set to marry but Rehan wants Zooni to see him before them so he takes her to an optician who informs them that there's an eye surgery that can be done to restore her eyesight. Zooni under goes the surgery and wakes up the next morning to find her parents beside her, she is naturally happy to see them but Rehan is nowhere to be found. Before Zooni knows it, she is being told to identify remnants from a terrorist bombing as the personal effects of her soon-to-be hubby. She is mortified when she finds out that they belong to him, meaning only one thing and that is that he has died. 7 years pass by & a new terror plot to blow up India arises. It's up to a criminal profiler (played perfectly by Tabu) & a police chief (played by Sharat Saxena) to foil the plot. We also discover via a new makeover that Rehan is very much alive & posing as a soldier in search of a warhead that will help his Kashmiri grandfather (this Kashmir's answer to Osama Bin Laden is played by Ahmed Khan) carry out his latest terrorist threat. Poor Shiny Ahuja plays one of the unfortunate soldiers aboard the chopper that's eventually sabotaged by Rehan as he escapes into the snowy mountains with the warhead. Injured and very near death (in a very Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas fashion) Rehan staggers to the only house he can find in the snowy mountains in order to die on the doorstep but when he knocks on the door, the woman who answers looks so vaguely familiar. She looks very much like the Zooni he abandoned 7 years ago, because she is the Zooni who he abandoned 7 years ago and not only that, she has a 7 year old son named Rehan who runs to get help from his grandfather for the dying man. The only trouble is, Zooni never saw Rehan after her eye surgery so she does not recognise him. The things that happen next after this point are enough to make another whole movie but thankfully it was so well done that there wasn't or isn't a need for one. When Zooni comes to realise that this soldier she has helped nurse back to health is none other than her very own Rehan, and the catastrophic chain of events that follow this revelation, she goes (as we would say on this side of the ocean) "Gangsta" in a quest to save the life of her loved ones as well as that of a nation. It is still very hard for me to decide what is best about Fanaa, the acting, cinematography or the music? That's how solid this film is. All the actors give outstanding performances, especially Kajol who just breaks your heart. If she doesn't sweep her category in all the awards ceremonies regarding this film, I will be very surprised. In this film she was a twisted Mother India, with an edge and in her character's shoes, I would like to think that I would have done the same thing. Bravo!
