"For One Night" intelligently deals with a racially simmering problem in a small Louisiana town in modern days. It's basically where a school has segregated its proms. One young black student, Brianna, who is being considered for class valedictorian, wants to change all that.
While this is occurring, a black journalist comes back to town and picks up on this to create a tremendous story with racial animosity following.
This young reporter is in love with the town's white assistant principal. This guy fits the breed of our modern educators-a swinger, fun-loving person with serious intentions all around.
Naturally, we have the cliché council man who is the epitome of bigotry. His daughter really likes a black student as well.
The film seriously questions our racial mores and doesn't necessarily end on a very positive note.
We see the politics involved on just about every level- the town's school system being a prime example. We see a principal caught up in all this. There is also the stereotyped black father who is passive, thereby getting the journalist daughter angry at him.

Plot summary
Their town always had two proms, one for the whites and one for the blacks. When both proms wanted the same DJ, Brianna McCallister suggested combining the proms, which would also mean more money for decorations. However, her idea shook the town up, especially after a white student was let off for the same offense that a black student was suspended for. Can the town overcome racial tensions and finally combine the two proms?

For One Night - Shows Plenty of Racial Heat Here ***1/2
Pooly plotted, unbelievable and inconsistent characters
There are two problems with this film. First it focuses on one student Brianna McCallister, almost exclusively devotes far too much to the reporter. We get to know a good deal more about the reporters father than any student other than Brianna. Something like this could not happen without the students sticking together and this is not shown beyond the most superficial level.
Secondly, none of the characters are written to be remotely consistent.
The result is a series of episodes that gives little feel for how a group of students might succeed in integrating their prom. There is a good story in the real events that this film is based on - this is not it.
Excellent movie displaying a powerful message
This movie displays such a powerful message that most people take for granted. In our nation we have a history of segregation, and for those of us who think it is all in our past - this movie shows us that it is not. The actual events took place in 2002. The movie makes us aware that racism is still around, and is something that is not good. One person can make a difference, and just knowing that gives hope that one day maybe people can look at other individuals and see them for who they are and not the color of our skin. I commend the real girl who took it upon herself to take action and try and change the world, at least one small town at a time in order to make it better. I would recommend that everyone should see this movie. It is very good!!!
