This movie attempted to be a bit different, they opted to make a realistic horror. A sleepy town is terrorised by a savage Grizzly bear. It's kind of like a Bear version of Jaws.
It's carnage in the forest, body parts start appearing, the powers that be realise quickly that the miscreant is a bear, not just any bear, it's a smart and clever unique bear! I'd almost go so far as to say a criminal mastermind and king of subterfuge. A small team consisting of two estranged brothers, A Sheriff, his deputy. The most interesting character being Michelle, a girl out photographing in the woods and happens to be deaf.
The best thing about the film has to be the visuals, they were never going to fail with the shots of the landscapes, seriously beautiful, almost awe inspiring.
Some of the effects are good, some of them are a bit amateur. The shots of the bear not attacking are great, they are glorious animals who couldn't enjoy those (Salmon I guess.) It's some of the attack scenes that look a wee bit dodgy, as viewers I guess we expect so much.
There are lots of tense moments, you are waiting for the Bear to appear and you never know when, but some of the scenes with long drawn out dialogues seem to go on forever.
Interesting finale, the Bear decides not to rip his victims apart in seconds, but to make a meal out of it.
The acting is mixed I'd have to say, James Marsden is a cut above, he us pretty good, the film was a surprising choice I guess, but good on him for doing something not mainstream. Billy Bob Thornton does a good job at making his character rather nauseating, but he's as much screen time as he perhaps should have been. Some of the lesser parts aren't great, some of the Sheriff's team seem like they've wandered into the film.
It's a bit of furry fun. 6/10

If you like Bears, then perhaps this one's right up your....maze?
I'M DEAF. NOT STUPID
After seven years in prison Rowan (James Marsden) is requested to come back to his home town in Alaska to find his best friend Johnny Cadillac (Adam Beach) who guided some poachers into a forest region known as the "Grizzly Maze". With poachers killing cubs, bootleg cutters clearing the forest, and the salmon no longer running, Papa Grizzly (Bart the Bear) has become a hunter of men.
Several people are in the woods hunting the bear while it is hunting him. Good role for Billy Bob Thornton. Some good up close grizzly attack scenes. The forest looks so pristine, I thought it was CG.
Guide: F-bomb, no sex. Nudity (Kelly Curran)
Red Machine
I'm not sure if this was a working title for the movie once (I think I saw it in the End Credits, but it might only have been there because they call the movie "Red Machine" in Germany),but it doesn't really fit. Even if you consider the Grizzly to be aggressive and violent, Red Machine is not how you should call it.
It's an animal strikes back (or nature if you will) movie, which might not be everyones cup of tea anyway. It's fairly decent for the budget it has, though you should not compare this in any way, shape or form with any Saw movie. Another reviewer falsely believes the director also was at the helm of Saw 2-4, which is incorrect. He only directed the fifth in the franchise, but was involved in other roles throughout the series. Nonetheless this "guarantees" that there is a violence level that will be explicitly shown in the movie.
You have a nice ensemble of actors involved here, which is almost strange for a movie like this. Not all of them get the time to shine, but at least there is more depth to some of the characters that you might expect (some may add more focus was shown there than on some of the technical aspects of the movie, but that would be a bit mean)
