THERE ARE THINGS OUT THERE

PLOT SPOILERS?

The DVD cover explains the film. There are three races. Clay people, who are us. Then there are light people or angels which we don't see, but may be there. And then there are the Jinn who are fire people. They ruled the earth before the vulgar clay people took over and some of them want it back, while others like Darth Maul will help us.

Shawn (Dominic Rains) is part of a cursed line of a Jinn killing all the offspring in the line, but only once another child is born, then it kills the father. Shawn is married to Jasmine ( Serinda Swan) who is barren and can't have children, but is pregnant. Where have we seen this before?

The film has overt religious connections, but makes religion rather universal. A sword with a Hebrew symbol in the hilt is used against the Jinn. Also a glass container with blue liquid which looks like "Angel for Men" makes the Jinn angry when you smash it on their head.

The Jinn have all kinds of magical and supernatural powers and can kill us with a wink of an eye, but play by Hollywood rules.

Guide: Very mild swearing. No sex or nudity. Satan could use a bath and a haircut.

Good people ... fighting hard

I really wanted to like this even more. And I reckon since I am accused of being too nice and good when it comes to ratings (often that is),why stop now? The cast is cool, take Faran Tahir, Serinda Swan or Ray Park. You may not be familiar with those names, but if you are you may like them and think they're good too - which is a shame because they are not fully utilized here.

Especially Ray Park, you kind of wish, he had a bigger role in this. Not just because he's a wonderful human being (at least as he presents himself at conventions),but because he has charisma. Anyway, the effects are good, the story moves along nicely, but the flaws in the script and otherwise may be in the way for you to actually enjoy it way more ...

Exposes Michigan's plot against the mentally ill . . .

. . . as the self-proclaimed "nerd with a plan," GOP Gov. Rick Snyder, selectively hands out that state's film credits (in stark contrast to his Democratic predecessor Jennifer Granholm's indiscriminate showering of tax breaks on Hollywood types). The closing credits for JINN show it was filmed all over the Wolverine state's "mitten," indicating a high level of cooperation from all levels of government. The key scene of JINN involves the weapon-wielding white fire-breather "Gabriel" sending a large number of mental patients to their deaths. Note that this state has closed 80% of its mental health care facilities since 1970 while cutting treatment costs by roughly 90% (when figures are adjusted for inflation). It has filled its prison system with citizens even the state's own experts admit are mentally ill (at a far cheaper cost than the closed hospitals, since the level of psychiatric care for Michigan inmates is a joke). Phase 3 of Snyder's plan, as shown in the state subsidized and facilitated JINN, is to simply expand the state's existing "suicide by cop" liquidation program, with "Gabriel" carefully crafted to gain the public's approval. After all, bullets are cheaper than prison cells.
