Caturday

These animated shorts are some of the most impressive Oscar nominees, including Rosana Sullivan's "Kitbull". I recommend it.

Cat and dog

Part of me knew from reading the premise and hearing of the theme that 'Kitbull' would be at least good. Am a great fan of animation and Pixar and have been very impressed to blown away by all the SparkShorts short films, finding even the weakest 'Smash and Grab' and the unfairly criticised 'Purl' very good still. 'Loop' and 'Float' were especially wonderful of the short films seen prior to watching 'Kitbull', as they had the deepest themes and connected with me the most emotionally.

'Kitbull' is another effort of Pixar's to absolutely blow me away. To me, it's the best of the SparkShorts short films (seen to date) and is as brilliant as Pixar at its best with its short films pre-2010. So a fond reminder of when Pixar was particularly at its peak and had established itself as perhaps the best animation company running at the time. If one has to ask what SparkShort short films are most recommended, my easy picks would be 'Loop', 'Float' and especially 'Kitbull'.

The animation (traditional animation this time, like 2020's 'Burrow', stand corrected also on that being the studio's first foray into traditional animation when it is 'Kitbull', rather than Pixar's usual computer visual style) is beautifully crafted, stunning even at its best. Especially the meticulously detailed and atmospheric backgrounds and have not seen character designs quite like these in a Pixar short film. The music fits very well without being over-scored or being too constant.

Many SparkShorts short films have been very effective in being written with a lot of love and sincerity. That is very obvious in 'Kitbull', every bit as much as in 'Loop' and 'Float'. The story is simple but also is incredibly cute, without being overly so, very heart-warming and also incredibly poignant. The climactic moments are tear-jerking. The messaging is sincere and never too heavy.

Furthermore, 'Kitbull' contains one of the warmest and most beautiful unlikely friendship parirings in animation in my view. One would think that a cat and dog would not gel, when they are depicted so many times in animation as being enemies (think the Tom and Jerry cartoons or whenever Sylvester from Looney Tunes has to encounter dogs),but their friendship has such a warm heart and relatability it is very difficult to not root for it. Loved the two characters too, again Pixar delivering on creating empathetic characters.

Overall, absolutely wonderful and a fine example of why Pixar deserves its acclaim. 10/10.

Sweetly Presented

A tough little cat who is just trying to survive makes its way through a harsh part of the city. In the process she comes across a pit bull who is chained and abused by its owner. There are things that are natural roadblocks in their relationships, mostly from their nature. Finally, because of the very issue of survival, something happens. Nice work.
