A Relatable Story of Queerness in the Bible Belt
Despite the critiques of this documentary, I believe that this film does everything it can to expose the hateful practices of religion in the South. I know people who have been sent to "counseling" or have been targeted during sermons for their sexual orientation. While I watched The L Word and numerous gay-ish films before this documentary, I have not seen my experience portrayed until this point. Thank you to everyone who took part in this documentary.
Interesting people but no arc to film
A hodgepodge of observations and snippets of life with no arc. Very little is revealed as the film goes on. If you watch the first 15 minutes you pretty much have seen what the film has to offer: religion and homosexuality can butt up against each other sometimes. What a shock. The most interesting scene was the final one when a reformed lesbian/mother takes her gay son to church with her in hopes that he too will convert. She says that if she ever were gay again that she would pray god will kill her or she will Kill herself and I'm like omg, where is THIS going to go...end credits. Give the film a button kids. The difference between an ok documentary and a great one I think is that a great one has a "story" to tell: not just document stuff and let us fend for ourselves. Let's have a beginning, middle and an ending.
