I have to say that when I sat down to watch the 2019 Thai romantic comedy "London Sweeties" I was expecting something more funny, especially since the synopsis was mentioning the Thai youngster's lack of language ability.
So yeah, I was expecting the movie to be a lot more fun that what it turned out to be. In fact, the directors just hands down wasted such a massive potential for a funny movie by not taking the language situation further and milking it for all it was worth. Yeah, instead the audience is treated to a lukewarm glass of pseudo-romance without any punch, emotion or chemistry.
The storyline was very, very weak, and I have to admit that I was asking myself 'is this seriously all the movie have to offer?' a couple of times throughout the course of the 92 minutes that the movie ran for. And with so little solid contents to the storyline, believe me the movie felt rather prolonged.
And it didn't exactly help much that most of the characters were bland and one-dimensional. So many of the characters are individuals you never taking a liking to or an interest in, simply because they are just there on the screen without having much of any memorable impact through the storyline.
"London Sweeties" could have been so much more if the directors had gone full heads-on with the language barrier and inability to speak and understand proper English, because it could have lead to a bunch of awkward and hilarious situations. But no, instead a bland paste of a romantic comedy was dished out.
I was genuinely disappointed with the movie, and it is not one I would recommend. Both the romance and comedy elements in "London Sweeties" were disappointing.
My rating of "London Sweeties" lands on a three out of ten stars.

Major waste of potential for something truly funny...
i was in this movie
Good movie, great cast, missing some credits on imdb, i only know because i was in it.
Simply entertaining!
Raising cultural issue that packed with a fresh and fun humor. It must be admitted that the Asian community (especially East & South East Asia) always stigmatized for the lack of understanding English as the international language.
In fact, this problem is even more complicated in the movie where the main character (Pron, played by Maylada Susri) has problems with her self-confidence and speaking skills (even in Thai that she regularly used). But it becomes an interesting premise when it is clashed with cultural problems, language barrier and cultural adaptation.
The friendship theme that is commonly used by Thai romance-comedy movie and become its trademark is also felt strong. This movie can make us excited, laugh even sad, all at once, and maybe some of us have felt it first.
