Quite refreshing-better than some Marvel movies

Unexpectedly refreshing and quite a good movie. Greta plot, acting and likeable characters. Much better than some of the Marvel movies.

A funny and top-level superhero movie from Russia

Very good Russian action comedy movie. If on the one hand deciding if Major Grom is a superhero is questionable, on the other hand his enemy is clearly a very nice and well developped supervillain, Plague Doctor, with fantastic look and in the more nuanced style of Magneto (X-Men) or Killmonger (Black Panther) or Ocean Master (Aquaman). The main character is charismatic and funny, the script and direction are excellent, action scenes are great, there are good gags and special effects, and the outcome is very amusing. The only problem of the film, which is serious, is one that exists in more than 90% of the movies from this genre: torture, crimefighting out of rule of law and contempt for due legal process appear positively throughout the film.

"The fun is only just getting started."

For all intents and purposes, this film for me was a reworking of the Batman mythos with a rearrangement of characters. The villain Plague Doctor (Sergei Goroshko),not fully revealed until midway into the story, adopted the trappings of a Batman-like character (with Penguin's nose for a disguise),while his alter ego self took on the dimensions of The Joker, perhaps inspired by the twin version offered up in the "Gotham" series. The hero Grom (Tikhon Zhiznevskiy) had his Robin sidekick Dubin (Alexander Seteykin) with a controversial assist from a Catwoman named Yulia (Lyubov Aksyonova). If I hadn't read other reviewers here citing it's origins as a comic book movie I would have come to the same conclusion myself. That's not meant to detract from the movie, as it is quite entertaining and has enough action and excitement to keep one focused. What surprised me most was that this is a Russian production, and you wouldn't expect it's hero to be openly fighting corruption against police and government forces the way he does, while the citizens of St. Petersburg stand behind the vigilante who's taking down major criminals. I don't think either side would have gotten very far in present day Russia, but while it lasts, it's a blast.
