Hockey legend Gordie Howe (Michael Shanks) retires from the NHL in 1971. Two years later, his wife Colleen (Kathleen Robertson) is concerned that her sons are not allowed to be drafted due to the NHL's age limit rule. She pushes the drafting of her sons by the Houston Aeros in the upstart WHA. They are paid more than by the old school NHL owners. Gordie decides to come out of retirement to play with his boys.
This sports movie seems to be doing the championship route. I don't think it's the right drama. Gordie's drive to return to hockey has a little bit of drama early on but the championship drive has no drama at all. If there is any drama in the story, it's probably the merger of the two hockey leagues. The movie is more fun with the villainous NHL. Overall, I like the characters but the hockey lacks tension.

Mr. Hockey Skates on Thin Ice **
There is just absolutely no meat in this story of hockey legend, Gordie Howe, who retires from the Detroit Red Wings, only to go the World Hockey League and play and move to a Texas team along with his two sons.
The story tries to show Mrs. Howe as a loving, ambitious, hockey-mom type of wife.
I think that Howe needed more than an apology from his son, when the latter criticized him in an article.
There really is no central story or theme in this film. The film is a rather dull and poor biography of the hockey icon.
A good hockey story.
Mr Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story is a great hockey movie. The storyline of Howe playing with the Houston Aeros, of the W H A, during the 1973-74 season is sentimental. A father who wants to play pro hockey with his two sons. Gordie Howe comes back from being out of shape, winning the scoring championship, and winning the Avco Cup with his two sons is a great real life story. The portrayal of hockey life, the competition, violence, and the on ice action is excellently preformed. The Howe family life, and how Mrs Hockey contribution to Gordie and his sons success balances the on and off ice movie scenes. The comedy is great with the Bobby Hull rivalry, and how Oggi Olgerthorp got his name was great. Well written and directed movie. I give Mr Hockey a seven out of ten pucks. Mr Hockey shoots and scores.
