Real people corrupted by unreal power...

This is most definitely a film of two halves. The first one shows promise as a group of friends discover a long-since blocked up room in their rented home. In this room there is a mirror - but it proves to be more than just any old mirror. It is a portal. They can use it to improve their lives, their friend's lives - everyone's lives; but as ever - this knowledge comes at a cost. It's the "cost" bit that drags the film into the realms of dull relationship and betrayal melodrama. The science fiction elements that were quite intriguing for the first half hour are supplanted by rather poorly presented characterisations from some handsome, but mediocre, actors delivering an increasingly ridiculous storyline to an increasingly incredulous audience. The visual effects are quite effective, this can't have had much of a budget, and Isaac Ezban does have the germ of a decent idea with his concept - it just wanders off piste too quickly - and violently - and never quite finds it's way back. It is watchable, just not memorable.

In line

A really fine indie gem. If you like independent and low budget Science Fiction movies, you likely will ... like this too. One thing that stood out to me, is that unlike some other efforts, this actually has an individual "sane" viewers can relate to. The character is not just relatable but also seems to do things with a moral compass attached to his decision making.

Having said that, even he fails at times. Especially cringe worthy in the scene where the majority rule strikes ... but the story and some idea has to become reality - and some suspension has to be added. The one thing I actually have an issue with, is the ending. That really was meant to keep things somewhat open (although I would call them easy to decipher if you want to call it that) ... a shame, especially because there were good twists around anyway.

Also the movie slows down a bit after a really impressive introduction into this ... world the movie is creating. But again, those I would all call minor "flaws" and they never really take away much of the fun you can have with it overall ...

Done Before

Starts interesting then quickly turns into the familiar viewer hook of a stereotypical bar/alcohol scene. Interpersonal issues predictable & easy to script. Dialogue is daytime TV soap clichéd. Plot structure, however, does improve in how our characters pursue wealth. Very predictable consequences - no free lunch.

Cheap, easy prop of the far too often used mirror portal into another dimension arises again. At least it's better than the usual rectangular doorway in space.
