Even had she not played Emma Bovary for Claude Chabrol in 1991 Isabelle Huppert would have had little difficulty with this much-diluted version indeed neither she nor co-star Jean-Pierre Darrousin would have problems with virtually any role given their respective track records so it is ironic that they fail to convince as a much-married couple with adult children. It is, in fact, difficult to believe that two such major actors in French cinema have never co-starred until now. A third actor - who served as a bonus in my case - is Marina Fois and I was disappointed that her role was merely a cameo with barely ten minutes screen time but again, cast as an eccentric she had no reason to rely on costume, glasses, etc in order to convince as she is far too good an actress to need props such as these. The plot itself - aside from the Bovary overtones - is all too familiar but even the most hackneyed plot is safe in the hands of pros like these. Recommended.
Plot summary
Brigitte and Xavier are a couple of cattle farmers living and working together in Normandy. They have always got on well but now that their two children have left the household, routine and weariness have set in. One night, Brigitte, who has been invited to a party by a group of Parisians in the house next to their farm, lets herself be wooed by Stan, a witty, cool attractive young man. Some time later, giving a visit to a dermatologist as an excuse, she goes to Paris to meet him. But things do not go according to plan.

Emma Dilemma
Relentlessly boring
This film is totally unworthy of Isabelle Huppert. I can see her in anything, and usually I am astonished by her acting, but along with ' Ma Mere ' this must be one of her worst films. I have not seen all her films, so I reserve judgement. If it has any resemblance to the story of ' Madame Bovary ' it lies in the nature of boredom. Flaubert's novel depicts boredom and dreams and this film is pure and utter boredom in itself. I will give no spoilers as I would be too bored to give away the tedious plot, which in itself is pitifully thin. I thought she was dragged down by the situations the director put her in and frankly the other actors were not on form. I saw this on France 3 and I had hopes and the 1 that I give it is for myself and seeing it to its inconsequential end.
Romantic dramatic comedy about Huppert's love
Amusing and well developed French dramatic comedy, partially a wedding crisis drama, partially a romantic comedy, also with some social criticism. Charming and funny, particularly after the story moves to Paris. All actors are great, Isabelle Huppert is fabulous as always, and Marina Foïs as her boring sister-in-law is hilarious.
