A very difficult subject simplified. The foreign films slated for the Oscar this year were all masterpieces. Cold War, Shoplifters, Roma, Capernaum. All were amazing, jaw dropping this film should have a place at 2021. I had a tear running down my cheek - Penance simply broke my heart. This is film making is so good. See more
Plot summary
Father Eoin O'Donnell is unambiguous about the need to use violence to force Britain out of Ireland. He influences a young impressionable boy, Antainem to fight in the 1916 Rising. Fifty years later Antaine arrives in Derry as an experienced gunman. This appearance throws Eoin back to the cause of his breakdown in 1916. Eoin's influence on young Antaine echoes in Antaine's dark influence on altar boy Feidhlim.

Action only none, some English subtitles, a lot of irrelevant Drama, not a good short storyline, total boring garbage

The film spans 2 eras in Irish history. In 1916 a young priest in a rural town leads villagers and a young boy in the Dublin uprising. Years later in 1969, they come together again.
Overall the film was excellent but sad. It doesn't make any kind of statement about the struggle for Irish Independence, other than families get destroyed.
