Dusty Crophopper is a crop duster plane who has big dreams of racing in the Wings Across the Globe competition. He gets the help of WWII fighter plane Skipper to train for the international race. He isn't quite fast enough and he's afraid of heights. He is the underdog in a race of international speedsters.
This suffers from a lack of imagination. Director Klay Hall tells that John Lasseter just figured Planes would exist in the Cars world. It's the laziest of story writing. They have a good selling franchise and they decide to clip on an extension. If they want to include planes in the Cars movie, then I would feel fine about that. This is just recycled bits and pieces of other movies. There isn't one speck of originality in this. The voice work is rather blend and there isn't any particularly funny jokes or hilarious characters. It gets by solely with its stylistic association with Cars.

Loved it, fun, and gives a good message
I'm not sure why there is so much negativity aimed at this movie. I enjoyed every second of the movie and would definitely watch it again.
Yes the story line is predictable and we all know what the outcome is going to be, but don't we know that already is most animated movies?
I thought it was an inspiring story and gives out the message that if we treat people well , and help people, then good things can come your way when you need it, which works out well for dusty when everyone gives him spare parts for the goodness he shown them and the courage he shown making the journey.
It teaches the lesson you can be what you want and you don't have to be told what you are and i like that.
Not really the sky's the limit
Cars was not the most commercially successful film from Pixar but it had enough threads to be popular abroad and it led Disney to produce a spin off franchise of Planes which has the same animation style of Cars.
Dusty Crophopper is a crop dusting plane that sprays fertiliser but really wants to be a racing plane. However he has a chance of fulfilling his dreams as he gets some training from a retired flying ace, gets together a ragtag crew and takes part in a prestigious around the world flying competition where initially he is not taken seriously.
This is a plucky underdog story that smaller children would enjoy, the plot of Planes does not deviate too far from the formula of the Cars series including the stereotypes of the International crew.
