More Than Just A Murder Mystery

From the trailer you can assume that this is a whodunnit thriller, But after watching the film you'll realise that it is more than a murder mystery. The casting is so strong that there is nothing to say about it's acting performence.

Debutant director Honey Trehan has done a very good job in his first film. Cinematography by Pankaj Kumar and music of Sneha Khanwalkar is undoubtedly exceptional.

The only problem of the film is it's duration. It could be well edited. Otherwise it's a fine experiment.

Available on Netflix.

Dull, Dark, and Disappointing / 3 Stars

Raat Akeli Hair (Lonely is the Night) annoyed me. Despite the nonstop electric performances by the cast, it suffers what most films in the mystery genre suffer: it uses the final 20 minutes to explain itself. Using every other trick in the book of cinematic Indian police procedural, Raat Akeli Hair further plods into a territory aiming to catch the neo-noir bandwagon by its collar but instead falls flat also because of its contrived plot. There are a few notable scenes here and there but overall Raat Akeli Hai is dark, dull, and outright disappointing. TN.

A cliched and Average thriller in overlong narrative.

Raat Akeli Hai (2020) Movie Review :

In thriller genre when a narrative gets a terrific turnaround at the end and if it has already gone very clever with subplot then overall results are surprisingly pleasant. Raat Akeli Hai doesn't include any subplot even if it tries to pretend so, but in one thin line it doesn't fail to give another cliched thriller.

Raat Akeli Hai is about a murder investigation of an old age politician held by an honest cop Jatil Yadav (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). The old man is murdered just after his second marriage with his mistress Radha (Radhika Apte) and then everyone in his family is under suspicion. It opens up many facts from the background and another murder mystery which was covered by some powerful people. Overall it is set in a family chaos and all the answers lies there.

The film is overlong and slow paced which makes it quite boring and that helps it to kill our expectations from a thriller to have a pacy plot. Another miserable condition is it fails to create thrill and despite unpredictable revealing at the climax it just couldn't get high and bumping moments. By the time it reveals all the secrets it is too late. However, it provides bearable mysteries and that's enough to save it from a disaster Verdict.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui does his intense part very intensely but he didn't get much varieties to try. Radhika has an average role and limited scope which even goes unnoticed. Supporting cast is decent and some of them are brilliant in dark scenes. The writing of the characters could have been easy and detailed which might have helped to make it quickly understandable stuff because it bit confusing to know so many characters in just one final scene.

Already spoke about the thrilling elements being less but somehow too much darkness also couldn't get it right for the scenario. Music is dull and wasn't even needed just to make it even longer than overlong narrative. Well somewhere technical team did a fine job in Cinematography, background score and editing.

Honey Trehan as director looks promising with this film and I wish he gets a better writing next time to deliver upto his potential. In a nutshell, Raat Akeli Hai has some flaws but it also has some moments to recover the loss. Despite errors in the characterisation and logical reasoning the film makes an average thriller which can be watched for the cast.
