Scapes the bottom of the barrel, and then some

RAZE is a terrible 'tournament fight' style movie in which an all-female group of fighters are forced to battle to the death in various one-on-one bouts, all for the pleasure of the viewing public. The whole film looks like it was shot on a shoestring budget and 90% of the running time consists of various undistinguished actresses thumping the hell out of each other in various badly-choreographed fight scenes.

The erstwhile heroine of the piece is stuntwoman-turned-actress Zoe Bell (DEATH PROOF),who gives the singularly most wooden lead performance I can remember in a while. The entirety of her acting in this film consists of her jutting her jaw out and looking peed off, which I guess she achieves. Still, none of the other female cast members are any good, and you have to pity poor Doug Jones (PAN'S LABYRINTH) in a stock role as the bad guy. Watch out for an unrecognisable Sherilynn Fenn, one-time glamorous starlet of the early 1990s.

I'm a huge fan of action movies in general but the fights here are pitifully done and generally uninteresting. There's a strong air of sadism in the air here with an almost torture porn vibe going on in regards to the brutality, but it doesn't make for a disturbing viewing experience - just a boring one. Listening to the dialogue scenes in which the fighters go into their life stories is even more excruciating than the relentless fights...

I'M GLAD YOU LIKE SURPRISES

Woman are abducted and forced to fight to the death or else a loved one will die. The opening focuses on Jamie (Rachel Nichols) only to kill her off as our focus switches to Sabrina (Zoe Bell) a former POW who had escaped. The girls fight each other with Phoebe (Rebecca Marshall) being the villain in the group. This is of course entertainment for a rich society run by Joseph (Doug Jones). The film is formulaic as we wait for Sabrina to go Uma Thurman all over everyone.

The movie is basically a violent bloody woman on woman fighting. Each has its own background in fighting, but there was nothing in the fighting styles to distinguish them.

A fight rental at best.

Parental Guide: F-bombs. No sex or nudity.

Gender reversal

Normally you see this type of movie with men in the main roles and having a go at it. So you might find it refreshing seeing women "beating" each other (it's still just a movie, don't forget that). But it has the same downfalls as the movies with male fighters have. What the movie doesn't do, although they cast pretty women, is exploiting them, in the sense that you'll see them naked (you won't).

It's also a nice touch having Zoe Bell in the main role. Some may know her as stunt woman, though recently she also took on some acting gigs. She does her job as good as the script allows it. But the main attraction is the "bad" woman in here. And I don't mean any uber villain, but one of the prisoners (Phoebe) who while is only looking out for herself, actually is the one that has all the highlights of the movie in the end
