Rent Boys is a fascinating look at male prostitutes in Berlin and succeeds in that it doesn't try to gloss anything over. There is nothing glamorous to see here and the documentary is well rounded enough to give us a look at not only the boys, but the johns, the people trying to help them and the places they come from. I learned from it, and it needs to be credited too with not approaching this subject in a judgmental way. There are certainly things here though to turn your stomach, some of the people interviewed are brutally honest and at times it isn't pretty at all, even repulsive. As a whole it is well put together, but it does jump around a bit, introducing us to some people are who suddenly forgotten and others who's stories continue throughout the film. Since I'm watching this 10 years after it was made I do have to wonder how some of these guys ended up, but that's another positive to this, it makes you see all these people as real human beings.
Plot summary
Berlin stories behind sex for money. Despised, stigmatised and suppressed to the fringe of society - this is the reality young, male prostitutes face in Berlin. Most of the hustlers are immigrants, a lot of them act out of necessity. Rosa von Praunheim acompanies the young adults at their work in bars, porn movie theatres and on the street. He shows their reasons, their stories and above all, their strong will to survive.
