You have to wonder when they'll ever stop making these films – not as long as the games are popular, I guess. Saying that, RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION is a step up on both previous entries in the computer games-turned-film franchise series, and a lot of the enjoyment comes from the involvement of Aussie director Russell Mulcahy, who brought us the likes of RAZORBACK and HIGHLANDER back in the 1980s. Mulcahy brings a certain level of finesse to the proceedings that wasn't present previously, and thankfully the rubbishy music has gone to be replaced by something resembling a normal score.
Otherwise, it's business as usual, with shady scientific interludes cut together with frenetic action scenes and zombie-fighting fun. Sadly the film-makers feel the need to reference the other films (and games),so back are the skinless dogs and a creature that resembles the monster running around at the end of APOCALYPSE. The sole effort to do something new involves some undead in a stand-out set-piece that is only let down by some lacklustre CGI effects work. Elsewhere it's business as usual, with a definite MAD MAX 2 vibe going on, as a convoy of vehicles ride through a ruined landscape on their way to oblivion.
Jovovich is back as the tough heroine, more taciturn and uninvolving than ever before. That may be because of a certain plot twist (the box gives it away) but I'm not convinced, and I'm sure it looks like her face has been digitally improved whenever it's on screen. Along with Jovovich, a couple of cast members return from the previous flick – Mike Epps and Bruce Campbell lookalike Oded Fehr – which adds some continuity to the proceedings. The desert locales look the part and there is at least ONE genuinely good action bit, a surprise zombie attack with a nice nihilistic edge to it which comes out of left field towards the film's climax. Sadly, the latter is utterly predictable – even bringing in those old lasers from the first film – to leave us with a completely loopy final scene which sets the way for a sequel that looks to be unfilmable. EXTINCTION is far from a good film, but I did find it to be an entertaining one, which is more than can be said for the last two offerings they brought us.

Hardly great, but a step up from the first two nonetheless
Could have been so much better
The world is ravaged by the T-virus destroying nature itself. The world is drying up and the world is a desolate wasteland. Alice (Milla Jovovich) is roaming the world on her own keeping on the move. She battles zombies, bandits, and even crows. On the way, she joins a group of survivors (Ali Larter, Spencer Locke) reuniting with Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr). Meanwhile underground, Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) of Umbrella is doing research on clones of Alice.
This is the third installment of the Resident Evil franchise. It is a vast improvement over the 2nd movie. The desolate look is superior. I love the post apocalyptic vibe. I wish they concentrated on only Alice on the road instead trying to keep track of the Umbrella storyline. There could be a great zombie road movie only if they allowed it to happen. Instead they keep interrupting it with Umbrella, and ruins any possibility of a fun zombie road trip.
Another Full of Action Sequel
After the outbreak of the T-virus initiated in Raccoon City, the whole world is destroyed and crowded of flesh-eating zombies, and the humans keep moving fighting to survive. Alice (Milla Jovovich) travels alone in her motorcycle through the Nevada Desert, where she meets a convoy of survivors leaded by Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) with Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and helps them to fight against a bunch of zombie-crows. The group decides to travel to Las Vegas first to get fuel and supplies and then head to the decontaminated Alaska. Meanwhile, in an underground facility of the Umbrella Corporation, the evil Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) is researching an anti-virus to domesticate the zombies and cure people using clones of Alice. When Dr. Isaacs locates Alice through the satellite, he forges an order from the president and the troops chase Alice, while the group of survivors fights against a horde of zombies in Las Vegas.
The full of action "Resident Evil: Extinction" is another great sequel of "Resident Evil". The story is a sort of "Mad Max" with George Romero's trilogy, but never disappoints. The acting is great, highlighting the gorgeous Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter (from "Heroes"),and top-notch special effects. The end of the movie is a great hook for another sequel. My vote is seven.
