Originally titled Road to Red, this surf/skate/horror hybrid is all about five best friends who set out on a road trip that quickly turns into an epic battle for survival.
It was co-written and directed by Tito de Costa. It's his fist full-length movie.
In the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, a sheriff finds world skateboard champion Paul McGuiness' abandoned car parked at a lake and his surfboard flaoting nearby. Some believe he killed himself or overdosed. His brother and manager Bruce sets out to learn the truth, along with four of Paul's best friend. But now, whatever killed Paul is coming for them.
I'd compare this to The Descent, but there's plenty of skating, too. It gets pretty claustrophobic at times, if that's something that upsets you.

Paul's brother and manager, Bruce McGuiness, soon becomes haunted with the fear that he has caused the death of his younger sibling by having pushed him too hard to compete. Stricken with guilt and shame, he sets out on an epic road trip with four of Paul's best friends to restore his missing brother's honor and skateboard legacy. What begins as an adventure of a lifetime to make skateboard history, quickly turns into an ominous battle for survival as Bruce discovers that what happened to brother, is now happening to him.

Skateboarding, surfing and monsters
California Dream is a Dead End
This was re-released as Darkslide in 2019.
Paul goes missing after a poorly scripted bar scene. Brother and friends sell drugs, surf, skateboard. They make the movie Paul wanted to do to be "free" a man who spends all of his time surfing and skateboarding and making a living at it. Once you get tired of the beach music and death metal, they get trapped in a tunnel maze with cannibal rapist Encino Man. The second half looked like found footage quality. They toss in some life philosophy monologue to give a bad film some kind of philosophical meaning with phrases like "The brighter the sunshine, the darker the night." Sooo Deep.
On the bright side, they kill a lot of skateboarders/surfers who can't act. BTW Circus-Szalewski was great in a Randy Quaid kind of way.
Guide: F-word. Rape. Near nudity.
1 hour of nothing
Seriously, an hour before anything actually happens? What movie were these a-holes out to make? There was a full hour of skateboarding, weed smoking, too old to be doing this nonsense before anything remotely plot moving happens. Tell you what. You wanna watch a good surfing/skateboarding film and horror movie? Watch Dogtown and Z-Boys then immediately watch any decent horror movie that actually knows what the hell it's supposed to be. Or go watch the original Point Break if you're looking for philosophy, surfing and action.
