This is the story of John Otway's rise and fall and fall and fail and fall and fail. He dreamed a dream and probably should have stayed in bed.
Is this movie funnier than Spinal Tap? Yes, because it's true. Is this movie more tragic than Macbeth? Yes, because it's true. Is Otway the world's greatest Rock'n'Roll failure? It's harsh but fair. However Otway has a fan base that is dedicated to transforming his failures into success. His fans have moved mountains, trains and chart positions! They have sung, sweated and smiled. This story is as much there's as it is his.
Watch this movie. It will make you smile but more than that, it will go to Otway's head and inspire him to fail some more :-)

Plot summary
UK's cult legend John Otway returns to his old school to give a course on survival in the music industry. In the midst of the UK's '70s punk revolution and after a momentous TV appearance where five and a half million viewers watched him land painfully on his testicles, Otway was high in the charts. Too bad his next hit was 25 years later. John Otway's career is an educational, yet magical lesson in self-promoting - recruiting his fans for endless manipulative, over-the-top projects which, among others, garnered him status as The Nation's 7th Favourite Lyricist in a BBC poll, secured him a Top Ten Hit for his 50th birthday and a feature film for his 60th. Failure has its rewards. It's kept Otway in the spotlight for 35 years.

A lifetime of failure or a lifetime of success?
You simply have to watch this!
The other reviews say all there is to say about this magnificent, magical movie. Otway remains as naively and optimistically crazy as the first time I saw him and Wild Willy Barrett on the Old Grey Whistle Test and then when i caught them live shortly after. A genuine eccentric who must be both heavenly and hellish to work with. This film has moved into my top 5 all-time music docos/films alongside The Last Waltz, Monterey Pop and The Blues Brothers. A must see!
Entertaining, heart warming and very very funny!
Jim Morrison once said that he was interested in strange and unusual behaviour - especially that which appeared to have no apparent meaning. John Otway seems to bring this statement to life.
I recall watching Otway and Barretton the Old Grey Whistle Testvas a teenager and being amazed, The anarchic antics of John Otway were both hilarious and powerful. Although being aware of the split with Barrett, I lost track of Otways subsequent career (if it can be called that!) This movie covers those years in a fascinating manner. Otway himself comes over as a truly lovely and positive bloke. Always seems to be smiling - even when he appears to have lost upwards of 60 grand on an insane and doomed to fail adventure. Everybody else in the film speaks affectionately, yet despairingly of his antics. Yet despite almost every idea of Otway's seeming like it's "halfway down the bottle," a surprising proportion of them appear to come off in one form or another. (Even if it is not as intended...) The impression one is left with is that Otway has an indefatigable "can-do," attitude which is naive to the point of "Hey kids! Let's put the show on right here!" His positivity is really refreshing and his often meaningless anarchic antics, side-split tingly funny. Despite being linked with the punk movement (erroneously probably) Otway is a classic English eccentric, obviously cared for and held in deep affection by his fan base - with whom he seems to have an unusually close relationship.
Otway might describe himself as "Rock and Roll's Greatest Failure," but I felt this movie proves him a success as a human being.
