Now maybe I'm doing a disservice to this movie for some, maybe some feel it is sacrilege bringing Deer Hunter up here. But I do feel this is a spiritual relative to that movie. And yes Deer Hunter is the better movie, that doesn't make this a bad movie though. I actually quite enjoyed it to be truthful.
The acting is good and apart from one moment where the obvious is being stated by our main character, the script is quite tight too. Relationships are well woven and portrayed and the actors are doing quite the terrific and great job. Like the ending or not - it is inevitable!

Plot summary
The story sees Courtney as Cal, a by-the-book police officer who makes ends meet as a Marine Corps reservist along with his rowdy and inseparable group of childhood friends. When Cal's younger, reckless half-brother Oyster (Wolff) accidentally kills a guy in a bar fight and tries to flee, Cal forces him to face the music. After an unfair sentence, Oyster fights for survival in a dangerous Pennsylvania prison system while Cal and his friends are deployed to fight the lethal insurgency in Iraq. Overseas, Cal's world is shaken, and after he barely makes it home alive, he resolves to break Oyster out of prison - no matter the cost.

Deer Hunter reloaded
Adequate tale of brotherly responsibility.
This is certainly one of the usually cute but wooden Jai Courtney's better efforts as he portrays a tough cop-cum-marine ("Cal") who has to constantly clear up after his rather irresponsible younger brother "Oyster" (Nat Wolff). After the younger man accidentally kills his friend in a brawl, his brother insists that he face the music - but when the sentence proves more excessive than expected, and the ensuing life in prison downright dangerous for the young man, his elder brother - fresh from a recent posting to Afghanistan - determines to rectify matters. It takes far too long to get going and there is a distinct lack of action, but to be fair to the two brothers the film does try to develop their characters, the nature of their relationship - flaws and all - and though the dialogue runs a bit too much to the gung-ho, ye-ha! "temper fi" stuff that I hate, there is a semblance of integrity to the roles - and the performances - that makes this film watchable. No, you will most probably never remember it afterwards, but it's at the top end of these average, mid-budget, made for streaming movies of which we can doubtless expect many, many more.
Likeable cast playing unsympathetic characters
The problem with this movie is I had not much sympathy for the main characters played by Jai Courtney and Alex Wolff. The supporting cast played by Finn Wittrock as an amputee and the girl he likes played by Leighton Meester. The initial part is hard to follow. Poor direction then a bit of Iraq. The break part is fairly exciting. Of course you want to see if they get away. But then what's going to happen to Jai Courtney in prison? Dumb ending. A feel bad story.
