Tom Brandston (Chevy Chase) is the third rate TV meteorologist in Syracuse, New York. His son Hal is obsessed with Claire Bonner who just broke up with annoying Chuck. His daughter Natalie and her friends battle their winter-hating teacher and their great nemesis, the snow plow man (Chris Elliott). He gives Natalie a snow globe which brings on the snow day. His wife Laura (Jean Smart) is forced to stay home from her job to take care of their youngest.
For one shining moment, I thought this movie could be smarter than I give it credit. With Lane gushing over her friend Hal to Claire, the story could have turned with Claire asking if Lane actually likes Hal. Instead of continuing with the standard guy chases girl, Claire could turn the tables and help Lane get Hal. This movie could never be smarter than expected. The kiddie story would work if this is strictly a kiddie movie. It insists on pursuing the teenage romance which doesn't really fit the kiddie tone. It's a little sad to see Chevy Chase be reduced to this and be overshadowed. As for Iggy Pop, he's got to pick his projects sober. This movie needs to split up like Claire and Chuck. The kiddie story could work and the teen romance could work. They just can't work together.

When an entire town in upstate New York is closed down by an unexpected snowfall, a "snow day" begins when a group of elementary school kids, led by Natalie Brandston, try to ensure that the schools stay closed by stopping a mechanical snowplow driver by trying to hijack his plow truck. Meanwhile, Natalie's big brother Hal is using this day to try to win the affections of Claire Bonner, the most popular girl in his high school, while Hal and Natalie's father Tom, a TV meteorologist, faces off against a rival meteorologist for weather coverage of the day's events.

For Children Only
Tom Brandston (Chevy Chase) is the weather man of a television, fighting for recognition of his skill and knowledge. His son Hal Brandston (Mark Webber) has a crush on Claire Bonner (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and does not pay attention on the affection of his friend Lane Leonard (Schuyler Fisk). His sister Natalie Brandston (Zena Grey) wants to stop Roger the Snowplowman (Chris Elliot),the terror of the children. Tom's wife is a workaholic businesswoman, who leaves her family in second plane, giving more attention to her job. The story takes place along a snow day in Syracuse. This movie is very silly, and maybe children may have some fun. My vote is four.
Title (Brazil): `Quebrando o Gelo' (Breaking the Ice')
The only Nickelodeon movie that could make GOOD BURGER look good in comparison!!!
While this is not a horrible movie, it sure was dull and uninspired--with very limp writing and nothing really to recommend it. Now the kids might have a different reaction, but my daughter who also saw it with me also felt the film was amazingly dull and uninteresting. On top of a weak script and totally forgettable characters, the sight of seeing Chris Elliot on a big screen with his nasty-looking green-brown teeth is something I cannot erase from my mind (no matter how hard I try). In fact, while I actually liked Elliot in his show GET A LIFE, since then I have really started to re-assess him in my mind. SNOW DAY and his awful CABIN BOY are making me hate the sight of him.
This film is not nearly as watchable as Nick's later BIG FAT LIAR or even (choke, choke) GOOD BURGER!!!
