SOLIS is another one of those ultra-cheap thrillers featuring a single protagonist in a single location. We've had quite a few of these in recent years, from Ryan Reynolds being buried alive to Tom Hardy driving in a car, but this time around it's a sci-fi movie about an outer space accident leaving an astronaut stranded and drifting towards the sun. Steven Ogg - best known for being the character model behind GRAND THEFT AUTO as well as his villainous henchman role in THE WALKING DEAD - makes a good choice of protagonist, but the script is extremely below par. Solid thriller elements give way to endless back story and soul-searching, and by the end it descends into CGI tedium. Alice Lowe also drags the film down quite considerably, even if hers is a voice performance only.

Plot summary
When Troy Holloway wakes up to find himself trapped aboard a drifting escape pod shooting towards the Sun he quickly realises the true terror of his situation. With rapid oxygen depletion and a burn- up rate of 90 minutes, Commander Roberts leads a rescue party to save Holloway before time runs out. Having recently lost his son and now confronted by his immediate end, Holloway feels less enthusiastic about survival. But Roberts, speaking to him only through a weak radio transmission, is determined to save his life, and both soon learn that the lives they have both lived influence each other in unexpected ways.

Disappointingly scripted
Here comes the sun.
Another one-man movie. Troy (Steven Ogg) is an engineer for Orbis, an asteroid mining company. A steam accident happens on an asteroid and Troy manages to escape. His companions were not as fortunate. Was that a fly on the dead guy's nose? He finds himself in a modified CG corncob spinning in space, headed for the sun. He is in contact with a rescue ship, about 75 minutes out, about the time before he burns up, or freezes to death, or runs out of oxygen, or is exposed to deadly amounts of radiation, or until the audience gets totally bored.
Troy has a conflicting relationship with the voice at the other end. The film lacks flashbacks so we always see Troy's face in nearly every frame. Very boring stuff.
Guide: F-word.
It wasn't bad.
I knew after about ten minutes that there wouldn't be a lot of love for this film, but I rather liked it. Yes it was limited, in almost every area, yes it felt a little low budget, but for me it felt like 47 metres down up in Space, virtually the same concept, you're watching a film about hope, will he or won't be, and you're left hanging on til the end to see if he's rescued or not. I definitely wouldn't watch it again, but it was engaging enough. 6/10
