Great Movie Romcom Concept That is Bungled

Too many amateur mistakes. The film editor and director used a scene without focusing on the emotion in the car advertisement to explain the crucial motivation to keep the movie moving forward. This just one of the huge weaknesses in this movie. The extras in the background also seem staged at times. Some of the dialogue does not match up with the authenticity of the story such when Adrianna's sister not picking up that Adrianna at the time really does not like Enzo. Such dialogue just follows the way the stock footage of over romcoms use. But the director and scriptwriters apparently do not realize how inane it is in this context. The scene with Enzo driving his car talking to his brother on the phone fails miserably, like a live comedic actor having their line falling flat. Enzo's self-centered concern completely ruins what comes next. Completely unamusing and off-putting and unbelievable. Most of the time Enzo's character is just too unsympathetic to warm to the audience. It is hard to watch him with any empathy. The script often appears just thrown together, with writer's scrambling together like a television series at the last minute. It almost becomes a soap opera performance of huge proportions. And how does Enzo out of character know how to load a dishwasher unlike his married brother with a child? More poor story detail selections. The movie's own development is almost a replayed in the movie in how the marketing strategy in the film was thrown together without well-developed details. These actors just to not have experience to just throw together a great performance on the fly like Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick in Mr. Right (2015) that offered up a natural flair and dazzle to the movie.

There is even a reference to "thugs" in the school and later a problem with an "unpaid debt" which just seems to be an unnecessary extraneous subplot better just left out. Even with the upaid debt logic in the movie, the importance of Adrianna's father's business and her role was never quite convincing to keep the movie moving forward. These characters are being forced into a story reading their lines that really do not come from the heart, an important component of romcoms. Instead of using the auto repair as a great segue into how Andrianna can actually drive as an important background story that would have lent more credibility later in the movie, the director instead uses the debt subplot focus way too much. Even then, Adrianna's driving is not all that impressive. This romcom would have done much better if the romance developed on the video shoot set. The chemistry and the changing relationship between to the two lead performers does not flow well, too inconsistent, and becomes ragged and fake, especially the scene on the stairs. The predictable transformation in the romance comes too quickly as if a few touching moments can cure all. Unlike most successful romcoms, it appears that Adrianna makes the most effort of transforming herself instead of the self-absorbed Enzo.

The lack of established development of this movie puts it about five years behind where the Asian romcoms were at. Instead the movie is loaded with unconvincing and unnecessary cliches including the broken high heel and an overused reference to Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). The movie suffers from poor editing with scenes cut way too short like the video shoot near the middle of the movie and unnecessarily added extended scenes such as the auto business that only diverts attention away from the important main storyline. While the movie concept is fresh and fits perfectly in the romcom genre, the script itself was loosely put together with too many rough edges with a television director with only limited experience with full-length movies. The only things that make this movie watchable is the creative, fascinating theatrical concept of the film itself that should have been much more developed. But the great romcom concept is almost ruined in the hands of the writers and director. They even throw in blackmail and fake email subplots that do not help to enhance the movie which only serve to make the movie more unappealing. Even the supposedly big reveal is a letdown because it is only a pseudo-reveal becoming too serious, weird, and dramatic crossing the unspoken line of romcoms and comes way too early and does not really make sense. Even the real ending reveal and climax of the movie that had really good potential is botched.

Over fifteen years ago, Jennifer Love Hewitt played a deliciously steamy role in a duel role romcom that touches the right buttons in The Truth About Love (2005). An even more brilliant depiction of character roles can be found in My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (2010) starring Alyssa Milano and who produced this straightforward but insightful romantic comedy drama with a sweet twisting end. Even the classic of all romcoms as a mystery thriller that still sets the standard with Gary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in Charade (1963) or Audrey Hepburn's best actress Oscar performance with Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday (1954). Other movies to cozy up with include: An amazing 2015 Chinese television romcom series entitled Shuttle Love Millennium (difficult to find),Be Somebody (2016) where this rock star just wants to get away from it all, and the Korean Sci Fi romcom version in My Holo Love (2020). On a more serious note, the drama of masked identity is well performed in the sci fi drama Another Earth (2011).

Worst dubbing ever with a familiar storyline

Squared Love is a 2021 Polish Romantic Comedy and tells the story of a teacher named Monica who also helps her father at the garage. However what others don't know is that she also lives another life as a curly red haired model named Claudia who works in commercials. Problems arise however when she meets Enzo a womaniser who falls for Claudia. But will Enzo like the real Monica over her alter ego Claudia.

The plot resembles A Perfect Fit starring Jennifer Grey and Rob Lowe meets Hannah Montana. The main actress who plays Monica reminds me of Chyler Leigh meets Nia Dobrav while the guy who plays the charming loathrio resembles one of those actors you see in a Hallmark TV Rom Com.

My only gripe with this movie is the dubbing. By god was it the worst I have ever seen in my life. Yes I know its a foreign film set in Warsaw in Poland, but seriously why not have the dubs sound Polish while speaking English.

Overall watch it for the atrocious dubbing.

"Ugly duckling" model

The concept is quite familiar and the romcom aspect of the whole movie either speaks to you or it doesn't. And maybe in a couple of decades movies like this one will be frowned upon because of the cliches and things that are deemed offensive (some may argue that certain stereotypes offend them even today - which is a fair point) ... overall it will depend on your willingness to cut the movie some slack and suspend your disbelief.

The two leads are really well cast and the chemistry can be felt. Yes there is superficiality (see point I made above),but this is a movie after all. Not everything has to be dissected and analyzed. Especially not if you are trying to have some fun with it ... if you can overlook certain things, this can be quite entertaining.
