The movie takes place in Wales. After missing the first joke, I added the English subtitles. The story is told in first person by school boy Oliver Tate who spends time daydreaming. His vivid imagination is humorous. Oliver has fantasies about Jordana, another semi-outcast. She uses Oliver to make her former boyfriend jealous. Jordana has eczema and likes to set fires. Oliver's mother is a paranoid who believes her tongue is too big for her mouth. Dad is a boring marine biologist who gives Oliver love advice, claiming that if you rip your vest open in front of a woman, you can get a positive response. Oliver believes his mom is having an affair with the neighbor Graham, her former boyfriend, who is a "ninja psychic."
Like too many indies, after they create wonderful quirky characters, the film moves to a less than spectacular climax scene and equally sub-par ending with lame music to make you feel good.
F-bomb, sex talk. No Nudity.

I DECIDED TO LIGHTEN THE BLOW WITH SOME LIGHT ARSON
imaginative socially awkward teen coming-of-age
Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is an awkward bullied teen in Wales. He is infatuated with classmate Jordana Bevan (Yasmin Paige) who recently got dumped by her boyfriend. Chips is his no-good prankster friend. After accidentally sending Zoe into a pond, Jordana takes Polaroids of her kissing Oliver to make her ex jealous. He convinces Jordana to help him lose his virginity. He fears his mother Jill (Sally Hawkins) is cheating on his father Lloyd (Noah Taylor) with new age guru Graham Purvis (Paddy Considine). He also fears that Jordana is allergic to her dog and then her mother is hospitalized with cancer.
This is an imaginative coming-of-age movie. The interesting part is that Oliver and Jordana are likable despite some unlikeable actions. Oliver is a coward a lot times. He often makes the wrong choice. The two leads are still able to be appealing. This is Richard Ayoade's film and he brings plenty of visual tricks. In the end, the basic story is a teen flick with two cute kids and it's done with a fun touch.
Surface
We have a new director talent. Though he's not that new (has done some TV work and shorts and stuff of course),this is the first feature length movie he has done (apart of a documentary apparently). And while people start comparing him to other directors (namely EMPIRE Magazine and so on),hopefully you will go into this open minded and just enjoy the movie as it is.
Noah Tyler (a guy I really first discovered with Red White & Blue, shame on me) and his film wife Sally Hawkins are just amazing. The dialogue is great and the delivery by the actors superb. The wit, the comedy, everything works. I am almost tempted to say "instant classic" ... though I would be the first to slap myself. People shouldn't be allowed to say that. But this movie is really good. It had a few minor things (one or two pacing "problems", but minor and maybe not even worth mentioning) or flaws if you will, but this is one comedy that should be for your consideration ...
