This is a somewhat interesting film about history, about conspiracy theories, and the length that people will go to to support their own claim. So, we have this guy that runs a pawn broker, and one day a couple of girls come in with a sword that is apparently proof that the South won the civil war. Mind you, the existence of a sword really doesn't do all that much, despite the fact that there happens to be a story attached to it. The problem is that the story is all mumbled up as it appears that the person who wrote it wasn't all that sure of it himself.
These girls had inherited the sword when their Grandfather died - they were expecting to get the house, but it turns out that it was the subject of a reverse mortgage, which means that the bank ends up getting it (a reverse mortgage, for those who don't know, is a loan the bank makes to you so that you have money to retire on, and they get your house when you die). There also happens to be this kid that spends his time sitting in the shop watching conspiracy videos, so when the girls bring in this sword, he is immediately interested.
This is clearly a low budget, independent film, and in part reminds me a lot of Kevin Smith's earlier work. Basically the hero of the story, the owner of the pawn shop, is being challenged as to where his future lies. Sure, he seems pretty content to run the store, and as we find out it was a way to get out of the rock and roll lifestyle that had almost destroyed him in New York. The problem is that the girl that he was involved with has basically followed him down South.
It is interesting some of the things that this film explores, such as why people believe the Earth is flat, and how they actually explain it (a 200 ft high wall of ice),and how the pro-rebels refer to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression. Of course, there is also the idea of collecting these artifacts and hiding them away, so that the truth might be suppressed. Mind you, the film is entitled 'The Sword of Trust' which suggests that you probably need to actually trust the story that is attached to the sword to actually believe what it is trying to tell you. On the other hand, collecting these artifacts could be a means on preventing the alternate narrative from being developed.
Anyway, this film was pretty cool, and in a way I'm actually quite glad that I did end up watching it.

Trusting a Story
Nails It. Forget the low numbers.
This is a terrific Marc Maron.vehicle. In addition to being the primary lead he also does the soundtrack which actually enhances the movie a lot. It's a funny premise, a sword that proves the South wind the Civil War, but it might throw some Americans who don't see the humor under the bus. If you have a Confederate flag in your house and it's not ironic, this film is not for you..
Quirky Story Full of Quirkiness
If someone told you they had proof the South won the Civil War would you believe them? Of course not. Well, maybe "Flat Earthers' would. ZING! This story revolves around a woman who inherited a vintage sword. That was all she was bequeathed from her Grandfather so she decides to pawn it because why would she want a long sword lying around the house? While trying to find it's value, much more is learned about the sword as the pawn store owner initially tries to snag a deal as he thinks it may be worth quite a bit to a very specific buyer. The sword is believed to be from a Northern general but letters found with the sword write that it in was in possession by a Southern general because it was surrendered to him. Thus, this means the South won the Civil War. Quirkiness ensues when both parties attempt to sell it to that interested buyer. This has lots of good dry humor full of quick wit and amusing situations. Good acting and the film felt very low budget and independent which I think worked for the unusual story. If you are looking for something off-kilter, give this a go.
