Four boys join at a kiosk in a Madrid neighbourhood, located in street Felipe II , there they talk about their works and while planning have fun . They are the following ones : Carlos : Alberto Jiménez, a student obssesed with a vedette : Irene Daina who inhabits upstairs his flat . El Negro, Joaquin Zarzo , a mechanic at a car garage. Andrés : José Sierra, is a bellboy and he dreams to be a bullfighter . El Chispa : José Luis García runs the newspaper kiosk and is enamored for Carlos' sister . All of them live with their families , exception for El Chispa who lives with Kiosk's owner.
This is a coming-of-age story about a group of boys who just want to have fun , however, they become involved with their hard and complex lives . This Los Chicos 1959 belongs to Marco Ferreri trilogy along with El Pisito and El Cochecito . They were his three first films he made in Spain , being really influenced by Italian Neorrealism . In fact , this Los Chicos follows the style of the Italian Episodes subgenre and giving a strong vision of the period post-Spanish Civil War . Main cast is full of unknown people but in the support cast appears some familiar faces, such as : Felix Dafauce , Rosario García Ortega , Maria Luisa Ponte and a very young Ana Maria Vidal to be followed a long career as cinematic as theatrical .
The picture was well directed by Marco Ferreri and it won some awards and nominations . Here Ferreri gives a decent direction along with El Pisito 1958 , and El Cochecito 1960, both written by the the great screen writer Rafael Azcona . These films were realy beset by difficulties with the censors caused by thorny critical to social stratum.
Plot summary
Four boys meet at a kiosk during a rainy afternoon. One of them must study and the other three go to the cinema, although they're too young to see the film. Andrés works as a hotel bellman and dreams of being a bullfighter, "El Chispa" runs his father's kiosk, Carlos is a student, and "El Negro" is a shy boy. The group of friends just wants to have fun, but reality forces them to deal with the problems of the adult world.
