This incredibly thorough 90 minute documentary does a sterling job of covering all the essential bases concerning the 1982 summer camp slasher cult favorite "Madman." Among the topics discussed are the genesis of the story, raising money through limited partnerships, casting, Vincent Price being consider for the role of Max, last minute script revisions, Paul Ehlers being originally hired to do the poster illustrations (he was eventually cast as crazy ol' Madman Marz),the infamous decapitation by pick-up hood kill, how Joe Giannone was a very intense and careful director who knew exactly what he wanted, shooting on location at Fish Cove Inn, the priceless ending credits theme song, the theatrical release, and the picture's current status as a bona fide cult classic (one person astutely notes that one of the movie's key appealing virtues is that it has its own mythology concerning the Madman Marz character). Moreover, we also get a revisit to the Fish Cove Inn location, loads of behind-the-scenes stills, talk of a possible remake, and such "Madman" memorabilia as action figures, posters, and video boxes from all over the world. Without a doubt the best story related herein is that Ehlers' wife gave birth to son Jonathan during the shooting of the film; Paul actually went to the hospital wearing bloody overalls and some of his Marz make-up and was the first person to hold the newborn baby (!). The interview subjects are a pretty neat bunch of folks, with Ehlers in particular coming across as one really nice and interesting guy. Producer/writer Gary Sales, actress Harriet Bass, actors Carl Frederick and Michael Sullivan, and key grip Claude Kerven are likewise charming individuals with some fun tales to tell about the picture. The groovy syncopated remix of the theme music totally smokes as well and the various hardcore "Madman" fanatics are quite endearing in their obsessive love for the flick. Essential viewing for fans of the film.

For Fans
At a summer camp for youths, cockey pre-teen calls out the name of mass serial killer "Madman Marz".
Suddenly, counselors are being maimed and slaughtered in various ways by the backwoodsman who has returned when his name was called. documentary.Never saw this movie, Madman, but I just watched this documentary.
The movie supposedly made for a few thousand but somehow they wanted Vincent Price to star in it. There are lots of dependencies in this doc considering the alleged budget. Frankly it sounds to me that this film was financed by the underworld.
Very few people in this film have gone on to other things -- including the director. Odd, no?
Anyway, I suspect the doc is better than the film. Without the original movie as a point of reference I was sort of lost. If you are a fan of the movie, you will likely love this doc.
