Gilles Grangier 's heyday was behind him :one will never praise enough his great black and white films noirs of the 1955-1958 years.
Wide screen and color do not make up for the paucity of the ideas and the platitude of the lines (the great Henri Jeanson was aging ,and was the ghost of himself) .
Fortunately the cast, although wasted , is a strong hook :two monstres sacrés (Fernandel and Danielle Darrieux) ,plus talented actors such as Jean -PIerre Marielle , Claude Piéplu ....
The final unexpected twist ,supposedly romantic, fails totally to convince.
Plot summary
Mr Jo, nicknamed "the man with the Buick", is the darling of the small town of Honfleur. But he is in fact a trafficker with a bad reputation who would like to forget about his past, now limiting himself to smuggling rubies under the cover of a charitable organization which offers underprivileged children holidays in Switzerland. However, Mr. Jo is in love with a pretty widow and, in order to marry her, he is willing to get involved in a hold-up again. And "the man with the Buick", who seemed so honourable, will surprise the inhabitants of Honfleur when Inspector Menard reveals his secret activities.

From a Buick 68
Slow-moving and uninspired
Lovers of 60s french films might be disappointed in this film which will probably bore you to death. "L'homme à la Buick" has nothing that looks like a plot, a point or any other redeeming features. And even though Fernandel does a good job, as usual, he looks as bored as the audience watching the film. All in all, "L'homme à la Buick" is a crime story with no suspense (and possibly the worst car chase in the history of cinema),a love story with no passion, and a moral tale with no wit.
