Gee ... I started to type in One of and the computer filled in the rest, so obviously ... i've named some other movie here on the IMDb one of my favorites ... oh well ... room for more than one.
This movie, The New Age, is one of those great black comedies that sort of fell through the cracks on release ... and for some odd reason has not yet been released on DVD, which is a shame.
I just rented it tonight and dragged my VHS player out so I could watch it. It's been awhile since I've seen it ... just some great lines and scenes ... a walk through southern California new age spiritualism and materialism ...
A very intelligent script ... great acting and casting ...

Plot summary
A 'grown-up' film about adult relationships, and the vapidness of new ageism. Peter and Katherine Witner are well-off, SoCal yuppies. They're intelligent, and have great jobs but no centre - no real foundation which gives messaging to their lives - just very hedonistic, and emotionally immature. When they both lose their jobs, they begin to have sex with various partners. As a solution to their situation; they decide to start a business, together, and in order to find meaning to their empty lives, they turn to various new age gurus, and other such groups. Eventually, they emotionally hit rock bottom, and must make some hard decisions.

One of my favorite movies
A lead balloon of a film
"The New Age" is deep satire which runs the gamut of things 90's. Using a Davis and Weller, a 40ish L.A. married couple, as a centerpiece, the film attempts to depict the emptiness of the hedonistic, materialistic, and morally bankrupt life style of the "new age" as it follows the principals from schmoozfests to open marriages to euthanasia to spiritual healing to spas and massages to orgies, etc, all the while portraying the characters as subtle exaggerations which are likely to go over with most audiences like a lead balloon. This unfortunate product by Tolkin starts like serious drama and slowly drifts in limbo somewhere between satire and realism so as to leave many wondering why the film was made and why they bothered to watch it.
Getting old
Any new age is bound to get old ... and I reckon that is true for this here too. Now having said that, there are still themes and other things here that will ring true to you or that you will be able to at least understand. Having a business together being the new having a baby together .. some may feel this to be an apt analogy too.
Of course this has not just social messages, although considering the lows or depths Peter Weller is going to go at certain moments to just be able to exist ... of course existing is one thing, fulfilling one self another. And being sexual beings (no matter the age - no pun intended) the movie explores that department too ... quite thoroughly. So this may tickle your ... I'm not even sure I can write that without it being innuendo ... so maybe this will be able to entertain and excite you a certain way and especially tease your mind. Not arousing in a sexual way but also in a culturaly way .. do you play the piano? Of course there are hidden meanings and there is a lot subtext all over the movie (again no pun intended) ... either you will be able to dig it or not.
