Without a doubt the worst RING film yet – and that includes all the various remakes, sequels and rip-offs that followed in the wake of the Hideo Nakata shocker. The worst thing about this one is that Nakata himself directs, but seems to have forgotten all the subtlety and all the atmosphere that made the original RING such a chilling masterpiece. THE RING TWO shows the ghost girl in the very first scene – and if you remember you don't see her in the original Japanese film until the end – giving you some idea of just how diluted and over-obvious this movie is. A Hollywood film in the very worst sense.

Instead of remaking the Japanese RING 2, this one goes in a completely different – and soul-crushingly pointless – direction. We're introduced to Samara's mother, played by Sissy Spacek, in one entirely superfluous scene. Gary Cole pops up as a slimy realtor's. A kid gets possessed and Samara keeps on popping up in mirrors, bathtubs, you name it. Never for a moment is this film scary or indeed interesting, and as Naomi Watts flounders around in wide-eyed surprise you can't help but sympathise with her for appearing in something so yawn-inducing. Take, for instance, the attack by a herd of evil CGI deer. What powers that be could ever envisage this as something remotely spooky?

Aidan (David Dorfman) and Rachel (Naomi Watts) have moved to a small town in Oregon. However the videotape seems to have followed them after Rachel finds another one of those strange deaths. Rachel takes the tape and burns it. Samara starts coming after Aidan, and Rachel must dig up the past to put it to rest.

The great thing about this sequel is that the actors came back to finish the story off. It's interesting to go back to the source story. However the franchise can't surprise the audience any more. It was a nice fresh idea in the first movie, but the sequel can't shock us anymore. It's a good wrap up. I hope they don't keep dragging this out like other franchises.

After watching the Japanese "Ringu 2", I question myself why I decided to buy and watch this American remake. The original Japanese "Ringu" was excellent, but the sequel was very disappointing. What can I say about a remake of a disappointing movie? Surprisingly, it is not so bad as it could be, basically because I am a fan of the dyed Naomi Watts, who has a good performance. Although having a leading role, the inexpressive David Dorfman is simply awful, and the screenplay is full of holes, as if it were a Suisse cheese. For example, when Dr. Emma Temple, the character of Elizabeth Perkins, dies, the boy leaves the hospital, and absolutely nothing happens: no social service or police looks for the boy. Max Rourke (Simon Baker) dies and is completely forgotten the rest of the story. However, there are some scary special effects making "The Ring Two"a watchable and forgettable unnecessary remake of an average film. My vote is six.
