Actor Steve Coogan (Steve Coogan) agrees to write for The Observer newspaper to go on a tour of restaurants in the north of England. He planned to go with gourmet girlfriend Mischa but she left him to work in America. He recruits his happily-married 11 year long actor friend Rob Brydon (Rob Brydon) to join him. Coogan is still chasing skirts and chasing that Hollywood stardom. Emma is Coogan's assistant.
This is a B.S. movie. It's fiction that feels real. The two actors are playing an alt version of themselves and there is a reality to their friendship. It works best when the two faux-characters B.S. each other. The best B.S. are their impersonations and the funniest impersonation is their constant need for Michael Caine. There is an aimlessness to the so-called plot. Like the characters, I also want to go home at some point and the movie is probably a bit too long.

All very nice, but...
'The Trip' is one of the many shows that seem to be on currently or have been on recently that feature actors playing versions of themselves. In this show we have Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon doing exactly that.
It's a rambling travelogue of a show, that enables both performers to shine. The publics perception of them already plays a big part in it's success too, as they both play to it and against it well.
It doesn't really go anywhere though for me, with each episode hitting the re-set button. I also found it to be a little self-indulgent.
What I would recommend though is watching the TV series version of it rather than the expanded 'film' attempt, which milks it a bit too much.
Boring and annoying.
I stumbled on this movie by chance, didn't know what to expect, and after watching it I can't say I'm a fan. I like Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon normally but in this movie I found them irritating. The story is just boring to watch, two actors talking all the time about things nobody care but them. Their impressions of other actors were quite accurate, I'll give them that, but listening to it during the entire movie it gets really annoying at one point. I see they also have a series, and also other movies, trips to Italy, Spain and Greece, well I can already tell you I won't watch any of those after watching this one.
