I was thrilled when I saw "TrollHunter" as it was a brilliantly creative film--and there just aren't that many thoroughly original films out there. The only downside is that apparently the American rights to remake this film have already been sold--and I can only assume it will be thoroughly botched up in the process! My feeling is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! The film looks in many ways like a "Blair Witch" sort of documentary. The film even indicates that the crew making the film have since disappeared. So, this part may not be so original--but keep watching! The crew are investigating what they think are poachers killing grizzly bears--but the story ends up being MUCH different, as the 'poacher' is actually a government employee whose job it is to destroy rogue trolls...yes, trolls! I'd say more about it, but don't want to spoil the many surprises.
"TrollHunter" has some absolutely stunning special effects--the sort of stuff you'd never have seen just a decade ago. These wonderful effects combined with a wickedly clever plot make this a great film to see. It's one of the best foreign language films I've seen in some time. If this wasn't entered in last year's Oscar competition, I hope it's eligible this time--it's just a terrific film.
By the way, while I HATE remakes, this one might actually benefit from being done in 3-D. Just a thought.
Plot summary
When bears are found dead in Norway, students from Volda University (Thomas, Johanna and cameraman Kalle) decide to investigate. They stalk the trail of the mysterious hunter Hans, expecting to find an explanation for the killings. The reluctant Hans tries to flee from the youngsters but then agrees to let them film him in action, provided they follow his orders. Soon the trio of students learns that Hans is actually a troll hunter working for a secret government agency. Further, several dangerous trolls have escaped from their territory and Hans is assigned to eliminate them.

Brilliantly creative.
A slice of brilliance
One of those films you watch, love, then watch again, and love even more the second time around. TROLL HUNTER is a quirky and offbeat 'found footage' movie that takes the likes of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and its ilk, picks it up and bites its head off. It's light-hearted and funny without being laugh-out-loud hilarious, while at the same time it crafts a meticulously-detailed story that never fails to impress.
The usual bunch of green college students are our introduction into this film's world, where trolls roam rural Norway and it's up to Hans, a dedicated troll hunter, to find them and slay them. Much of the film's effectiveness is down to Otto Jespersen, whose portrayal of the titular role is the stuff of brilliance.
But then there's plenty of other great stuff here to discover, from the awe-inspiring CGI effects work (I still can't work how they managed to outdo the kinds of Hollywood productions whose budgets eclipse the one on offer here),the genuine mystery aspect of the storyline (it's not just troll killing for no reason),the pitch-perfect pacing, the breathless excitement, the tension, the danger, THAT climax
what more need I say? I could talk all day about TROLL HUNTER's greatness, but you know what? I'd rather go back and watch it again
faux found footage documentary
In 2008, the filmmakers receive mysterious anonymous film material. In it, university students Thomas, Johanna and Kalle travel to document bear poaching. There have been strange incidents going on. Norwegian Wildlife Board head Finn Haugen dismisses the mystery. The group follows suspected hunter Hans and he confesses to be a part of a government conspiracy to hide the existence of trolls.
The obvious comparison is 'The Blair Witch Project' with the faux found footage documentary. The main difference is that some people actually thought Blair Witch was real. It's still fun to have the real element and the CGI troll. The second half is too unreal with the unbelievable government conspiracy. It also becomes a bit boring as the story meanders. This has some good elements and a watchable first half.
